Thoughts on RFP Writer at 300+ Billion AUM Shop

RFP Writer position with CFA charter To Business development or Institutional Sales.

What Is the likelihood of this. I have primarily a sales background but am looking at an RFP position at an AM shop. The role is middle office but you’re exposed to all parts of the firm. Is the pivot doable or should I continue on my sales track?

my though was since RFPs are essential to the sales process, that this wouldn’t be a and role should I want to move into sales after?

It's possible especially if you network and express an interest in making that transition. You'll definitely be in contact with the sales/marketing people frequently and have a good understanding of the firm's value proposition and product-specific pitches. You might even ask about the possibility during the interview process. In some ways, it would probably be easier to make the transition at a smaller firm where roles are less rigid.

Thanks for your input! They said that since it’s a middle office they’ve had people transition to front office and back office cause the department is very visible to the firm.

I also have some sales opportunities but at smaller firms. Certainly weighing my options but your feedback was very helpful

Certainly do-able - especially if you have, or are getting, your charter. Arguably that's one of the better roles to try and transition from. You have access to SME's, you can build extensive product knowledge and frankly you may end up knowing more about many of the products or strategies than the majority of people. Depending on how the firm/group is structured - you may also get exposure to a variety of different areas which is great.

I'd second making your long term objectives well known. Being an RFP writer will grow old very, very quickly. I'd be very clear with your manager, bosses, etc. that you are interested in growth opportunities across the firm not simply being a manager of an RFP team. That's what we've always encouraged our RFP writers to do, leverage the positions to build up a product or strategy knowledge and then move into a different role - most cases it's more of a hybrid marketing type positions vs. a product strategist, but that's more due to the nature of what we do as a firm than anything.
