Thoughts on the value data science brings to Asset Management?

Hi everyone -

I've read A LOT over the last few years about data science and it's potential value to Asset Management, especially coming from the CFA Institute publications and blogs. I've worked in portfolio management for a large investment firm for six years after graduating college and got my CFA charter a year ago. I noticed all these 1 year Masters in analytics programs popping up all over the country and decided that I'd prefer doing one of these programs instead of the MBA route. (I know a lot of people will disagree with me here, but I don't see a ton of value in an MBA - it appears to be an expensive placement agency that teaches you soft skills - not a huge fan of that idea, especially considering the cost). Anyway, I dove in head first this summer and returned to what we can call a "highly respected business school" to a full time Master's in Data Analytics program.

My goal is to return to Asset Management in a role that is more "quantitative in nature" versus the traditional analyst role I was in.

My question for you: for those of you who are currently work in Asset Management, are you seeing a lot of adoption of data science principles into your work flows? Do you believe the hype? CFA Institute recently added a section into their Level I curriculum about Data Science - I took that as a big confirmation of what I'm doing here. What do you guys think??

TLDR: will data science live up to the hype in the asset management industry?

PS: If any one here is looking for an analyst/associate with my qualifications - feel free to DM me. (sorry for the shameless plug :) )
