Too late to get a new job post graduation?
I work in AM for a large BB. I am an intern and have worked there since January 2017, so a year plus. I did not go through the normal hiring process since they needed some interns in January and then they just kept me on throughout the year. PT during school, FT during summer and breaks.
My boss confirmed with me multiple times that I wanted to stay on after I graduate in May 2018. Last week she pulled me aside and told me headcount is really high and I might have to transfer to a different department (Department B) within AM. However I have less interest in this department and I think my skills are not as good of a fit, they would prefer someone with a more technical background which I don't have. My MD oversees both departments and sent an email to the VP of department B. This VP replied back to just me and told me to "manage my expectations" and "not to get my hopes up".
From the sound of this it seems that I am not really likely to get this job. I don't know how fucked I am but I assume I am pretty fucked. I have asked my VP for recs for other departments but I think I need to start looking for another job.
However ITS APRIL. There are almost no positions that are even comparable to the one I have now. I have accepted I might take a pay cut but I can't find anything that is somewhat similar. I am not sure what else I can do or why my boss waited until April to tell me that headcount was too high. I don't know why I wouldn't have been let go of earlier so I would have time to find another job. I have been here for 1 1/2 years, and every season I have been asked to stay on. They have 1 new analyst who graduated in February and interned summer '17. Is there anything I can do now?
monkeyalm, sorry about the lack of response. Maybe one of these topics will help:
