Top Asset Management Firms in Chicago

Hey Guys,

Incoming senior here, non-target school. I have a strong interest in pursuing asset management after graduation. I'm based in Chicago and with 1 more year of university left to go, I figured it's time to pick three or fours firms and start networking heavily.

Any ideas of the top asset management firms in Chicago ?

Does it have to be Chicago proper? A lot of the ETF shops are based in the western suburbs. ETFs are probably the best part of AM to be in right now. Overall, I'd say it's the fastest growing part of finance. (Outside of debt collection in the current circumstance, but you have to figure that you're significantly less likely to be shot at by an angry "customer" losing their car in ETFs)

The only difference between Asset Management and Investment Research is assets. I generally see somebody I know on TV on Bloomberg/CNBC etc. once or twice a week. This sounds cool, until I remind myself that I see somebody I know on ESPN five days a week.

Most Helpful

Harris Associates - probably the best in Chicago. Would be very competitive to get a position, I think they hire from their undergrad intern pool.

Wells Capital Management - has at least one small team there, maybe more. They have a much larger team in WI if you're open to that.

Driehaus - don't think they hire undergrads

Calamos - don't know much about them

Segall Bryant Hamill -- this is a combo wealth and investment management firm. They have some investment good teams and have been growing nicely.
