Treat WM like IB/PE?

Intern in WM/FP right now, guaranteed full time offer, 95% will do this as a career. Very laid back, supportive environment. I grew up extremely stressed and often don't do well unless I'm under high pressure/stress.

Should I just imagine I'm in IB and work 10+ hour days and weekends?

If you can succeed in WM with a "Normal" work-life balance, what if I treat this like my job is on the line daily and hold myself to an IB standard?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights:

  1. Work Environment and Stress:

    • Working in Wealth Management (WM) or Financial Planning (FP) typically offers a more laid-back and supportive environment compared to Investment Banking (IB).
    • If you thrive under high pressure and stress, you might find the WM environment less stimulating.
  2. Work-Life Balance:

    • WM generally allows for a better work-life balance compared to the demanding hours in IB.
    • If you can succeed in WM with a normal work-life balance, it might be beneficial to maintain that balance for your overall well-being.
  3. Adopting an IB Work Ethic in WM:

    • Treating your WM role with the intensity of an IB position (e.g., working 10+ hour days and weekends) could potentially lead to burnout, especially if the environment does not demand it.
    • However, adopting a strong work ethic and holding yourself to high standards can certainly help you excel in your career.
  4. Career Satisfaction:

    • It's important to consider your long-term career satisfaction. If you enjoy the relationship-building aspect of WM and the supportive environment, it might be more fulfilling than the high-stress IB environment.
    • Reflect on what aspects of your job bring you satisfaction and align with your personal and professional goals.

In summary, while adopting a strong work ethic is commendable, it's crucial to balance it with the work-life benefits that WM offers. This approach can help you excel without compromising your well-being.
