What next - 3RD YEAR UNDERGRAD NONTARGET

Struck out on all my runs to AM/IM [Fixed Income Specific]

I have offers for Commercial Banking at an MM and Risk Analyst at a BB.

What is the optimal move here; I'm still very much interested in breaking into FI AM; end goal PC/CLO (buyside)

- I plan to continue networking, hoping FT positions may be more merciful.

- Do I reset with an MBA or aim at CFA/CAIA Certs

Note

- I'm not interested in IB, but if it's necessary then I'll do it

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some steps you can consider:

  1. Choose the Role with Better Exit Opportunities:

    • Risk Analyst at a BB: This role might offer better networking opportunities and a stronger brand name on your resume, which can be beneficial for future transitions into Fixed Income Asset Management (FI AM).
  2. Networking:

    • Continue to network aggressively. Focus on building relationships with professionals in FI AM and related fields. Use LinkedIn, alumni networks, and industry events to expand your connections.
  3. Certifications:

    • CFA: Pursuing the CFA certification can be highly beneficial for a career in asset management. It demonstrates a strong understanding of finance and investment principles.
    • CAIA: This certification is also valuable, especially if you are interested in alternative investments like private credit (PC) and collateralized loan obligations (CLO).
  4. MBA Consideration:

    • An MBA can be a powerful reset, especially if you can get into a top program. It can provide access to a strong network, internship opportunities, and a chance to rebrand yourself for buyside roles.
  5. Evaluate Your Long-Term Goals:

    • If you are not interested in IB but are willing to consider it as a stepping stone, weigh the pros and cons. IB can provide valuable skills and experience, but it is not the only path to FI AM.
  6. Stay Informed and Adaptable:

    • Keep an eye on the job market and be open to opportunities that may arise. Sometimes, lateral moves within a firm can lead to the desired role.

In summary, taking the Risk Analyst role at a BB, continuing to network, pursuing relevant certifications like CFA, and considering an MBA for a strategic reset are all viable steps to achieve your goal of breaking into FI AM and eventually moving to the buyside in PC/CLO.
