Where to go from here?
I came from a non-target and spent all my time during uni trying to get into IB. I did and had 2 internships at top BBs that i failed to convert purely cause i hated the job but was lucky enough to get a FT somewhere in IBD that I am planing on postponing. I now want a career in LO AM but realised they are so few space out of undergrad and I got rejected from my best shot one of (cap/fido/T rowe) and most of the other good LO AM only take from internships. I am out of uni now and just wondering if my only chance would be to go back to ibd even though I suck at and hate the job? Any advice on how i should map my next move to LO AM would be appreciated just want a research role on the buy-side or should i consider doing SS ER before which I heard is pretty similar to IBD
nutmegger189 , @dickthesellsider" any thoughts,??
The sad reality is many people on the sell-side and even on the buy-side (including me who wants to move to a slower money) are plotting a career in LO AM, so it's certainly not an easy move.
I am not big proponent of doing IBD if you don't like the hour, the people and the culture. SS ER has its own bs for sure (otherwise, why was dickthesellsider born as a finmemer?).
Another unconventional option is to work in a company in an industry you want to cover but in a core function (think finance or strategy planning, etc.) while building a brand on twitter / substack / medium via stock write-up and your views as an independent analyst. There are a lot of real investors on Twitter that you could just land a job there.
That's my initial thought. Happy to answer any follow ups.
Not nearly as qualified to comment but agreed, you will not last in IBD if you couldn't last the internship most likely (although it's likely that the job has less BS intern work to do like presentations and whatnot). Will just note to OP that you should not base decisions off things you just "hear" but an actual research effort because if you did, you'd know that SS ER is a completely different role to IBD.
But as dick said, everyone and their mother's dog wants a seat in LO. No sell side option is a guaranteed path but there's definitely a route from e.g. ER -> the three LOs you mentioned.
Another route is via top MBA. Don't know much about this route but it exists.
OP here. Thank you for your reply. I guess my main question is if I am to go to IBD what kind of steps should I be taking to ensure I increase my chance of getting into LO AM ASAP
-Does bank tier/prestige matter?
-should I start networking now?
And any other advice to make my exit ASAP, willing to take a paycut and exit to a no-name shop as long as it is research
I know the difference between IBD and SS ER. I was just saying the bullshit work and the toxic culture would be similar in bot and wondering if moving to ER, would be the only way to to go LO AM.
