WTF just happened? Do I have any rights?

Hey all,

I had another account, but didn't want to give away any info about me so I created a new account!

So, I was working for a subsidiary of a BB firm in the AM space, in accounting and 8 months in. My manager that I connected with well left 4 months into my tenor and left me with a new director that didn't connect well apparently. I was working in the major office of this subsidiary and the group I was in were working all in the second major office for the firm, so for them, I was working remotely.

Not trying to right a booked here so I'll try and keep it fairly brief. The people before me in the position didn't last, I was the third guy in the position within 3 years. Before my previous manager left, he paired me up to train with a guy who I was connecting with well, but this new director said it had to spot and I had to ask questions in this email chain to people who are literally the least helpful people I have encountered in my professional or academic career. Literally every answer to the most basic questions were rarely answered. I couldn't say anything because this new director would call me out and and say I was wrong for no reason. One time, she called me out to the whole group saying I was wrong about something and someone else was right, but it was a lie too.. like wtf?...

anyways with out getting to much into more of that. She said I wasn't performing (because I forgot about 1 fairly small task... I took ownership, apologized, and it didn't happen again) and I took it seriously and worked my ass off to do anything more to prove myself in their eyes. I did all my effing work and better than others too because I was always sending extra messages because others wouldn't respond.

Well, I got fired on the spot the other week. She had one conversation with me about not performing (although it was bs), and then fires me 4-6 weeks later; that's all I heard from it. HR was never brought into until the day of, no severance, no mention from unused PTO and if it'll be paid, no feedback, nothing.

Seems pretty crazy as posts relating to firing mentions that big firms try and stay clear of reputation hits and this seems like the person responsible had the intention to damage the reputation (funny, but not funny). I haven't read a similar enough story here to satisfy my thoughts on this. Does this not seem crazy? Knowing the subsidiary, it wouldn't surprise me at all if the director didn't follow company protocol from the parent company and went through the process against company policy or something.

Again, the parent company is a major BB firm. Wtf is happening here?.. Any help? Am I going to be denied unemployment?

P.S. cheering me on to find a better role is welcomed (haha!)

Cheers

It’s hard to read exactly what happened other than this woman just fired you for seemingly one mistake - which they do happen. How do you not know your benefit plans? Have you reached out to HR on LinkedIn or in anyway? Seems like the new manager is a psycho, go find greener pastures.

Only two sources I trust, Glenn Beck and singing woodland creatures.

I mean i know what my benefits are, but just not with the termination aspect of it coming into play now. I've been chatting with one person in hr and will be sure to ask for the reason of termination. I messaged the head of HR (who I chatted with in the office) and he straight up ignored the email. Lame... I have have him on LinkedIn too. Sorry to sound whiny, can't blame me though having to deal with this bs. Thanks for the help

Yeah this seems odd, I'd reach out to HR and ask for the reason you were terminated.  There's a lot of turbulence right now so you can always just say there was downsizing.  Don't worry, you'll get another job.  Next time you get a psycho boss though, start looking for an out AHEAD of time....

For sure and will do. Was waiting for my 1 year mark to transfer internally. Was making good connections in this office and was gumna try and get into more of a FO position. This firm encourages the move more than most others too. This is so sad...

Unfortunately its not odd or uncommon... the writing was on the wall, and you worked the right way through it. Sometimes it's the way the cookie crumbles. After your first conversation that was it, she was making a file months ago to terminate. It happens, and you'll bounce back... trust me when I say, this is a blessing in disguise. Mentally and physically it wouldn't have been healthy to stay. We take these personally because we are about our work and what we do, so sulk for the week, get on cobra, file for unemoyment, get yourself healthy and destress, start applying  and make sure you learn from it as you choose your next path. Best of luck!
