estimating the MBB entrant class sizes
According to Wikipedia, globally, Mck has about 9000 consultants, Bain has about 2700, and BCG has about 4400. With these numbers, what should be the estimates of the MBB entrant class sizes globally?

that's interesting. I didn't realized McK was so much bigger than the others.
.
Damn, you just case question'd this shit!! Impressive.
From personal experience in the college recruiting arena, I'd guess that McK hires no more than 300 undergrads in any given year. I'm fairly certain that none of the most prestigious consulting firms hire many more than that, either.
Do you mean just the U.S., or globally?
at analyst/associate level average tenure is 1.5~2 yrs
but new hire for manager+ levels are very little, and those people have more tendency to stay on
that said, a random guess for global MBB analyst class would probably be around ~1000 +/- 20%
.
I work for one of the MBB firms, and they give out some of the numbers at trainings. Your estimates seem a bit high 2x2, maybe by like 30% ish I would say.
Do you mean the MBAs or undergrads?
I tend to think with the total numbers (MBA + undergrad) of intakes, 2x2's number of about 3000 is in the ballpark. What is not certain is the MBA vs .undergrads ratio of the individual firm.
Just think about it. With the MBB combined number of more than 16000 consultants worldwide, it is difficult to imagine less than 3000 annual combined intakes.
I still have a question though. Assume the annual MBB intakes (MBA + undergad) is about 3000. That means the total number of analysts and associates should be about 3000x2 = 6000 (2 years of analysts and tow years of associates). Then it would mean of rest of 10000 (16000 - 6000 = 10000) are engagement managers, principals, and partners. That is still quite a top-heavy organizational structure.
.
Look at it from a project team perspective. The average project might be 1 partner (or full time equivalent, ex. two partners on the project but each has two projects at once), 1 associate principal, 1 engagement manager, 3 associates, and 2 analysts. That would suggest 5/8 of a team is MBA/ug. Divide that by two since each level is roughly two year position and that gives 2.5/8 ~ 31% of a consulting staff is hired each year.
Tweaking the numbers and to say that there are 4 associates+analysts per team and you get 25% of staff is turned over. Seems like we're all in the right ballpark.
It looks like your analysis would result in a larger class size than 2x2's.
You're right: 25% is larger than 22%. But that is the same ballpark. There are too many estimated numbers to expect to get a definitive answer.
