Hi all, nice to meet you! Looking forward to participating on the forums :)
Hi everyone,
My name is BelgianBaboon. I’ve been working in strategy consulting (tier 2 firm) for the past 3 years. Had some interesting projects on a wide range of topics.
I went to management school after studying law.
Joining the forums to get some fresh perspectives on career and engage in some interesting discussions with you all! :)
Happy holidays and all the best for 2020!
Hey BelgianBaboon, what a lonely thread. I'm here since nobody responded ...so maybe one of these discussions will help:
More suggestions...
If those topics were completely useless, don't blame me, blame my programmers...
I feel like this post is almost too wholesome for this forum
But regardless, welcome! :)
Is it common for consultants in Europe to have advanced degrees? In my T2 strategy firm, most recruits are either from UG or MBA, with a few exceptions made for people coming from other professions (industry jobs, law, academia).
Hey, thanks for the welcome! :)
Usually people only start applying after completing a Master’s degree, at least in Belgium. The market is pretty competitive, so just a Bachelor’s degree doesn’t get you very far.
You first do 3 years to get your bachelor’s degree. Then you complete your Master’s degree, which takes 1-2 years depending on what you’re studying.
Also, it’s not uncommon for people to have obtained an additional Master’s degree at a business/management school. ;
Welcome to the meat show
Hey Belgianbaboon, nice to see some fellow countrymen in this forum. It's generally hard to get info specific to Belgium.
I'll be joining an MBB in Belgium in a couple of months after I finish my master degree.
I guess you're at the post mba level now right? Do you have any insights on the types of jobs you are offered and the salary? Also, did you specialize in any industry?
Thanks in advance!
I'm really curious about MBB in Belgium, have heard of colleagues doing transfers to Brussels so the relationship seems solid. What's the general perception of which firms seem to be doing well and in which areas? Thanks!
Hey! I know that BCG and Bain have approximately the same size (Bain might be a bit bigger now) and McKinsey is definitely bigger. They all pretty strong but in different areas. BCG is recognize in energy and financial services for example whereas Bain is stronger in private equity and consumer goods.
Note that BCG brussels puts its consultants in the same staffing pool as Amsterdam and London. Therefore you could be working on a project of any of these two offices and with colleagues from those too.
What I've noticed so far is that MBB (especially McK) is moving more towards the operational space (to deliver projects end-to-end). It's simply where the big money is. I think it was also mentioned somewhere in this article: https://www.economist.com/business/2019/11/21/rethinking-mckinsey
T1 firms have to compete more often with T2 firms to get projects, because more and more clients want you to deliver the work and not just a roadmap or some high level figure.
That being said, MBB definitely still has their prestige going for them. There will be some difference still in the work that they do vs the work for which T2 companies are contacted (MBB will be more strategic still). They're still viewed in the market as 'the elite', especially when it comes to further job opportunities. I applied to a PE firm last year and was rejected because my T2 company didn't have the same prestige as MBB.

Hi wascar,
I'm not at post-MBA level yet. What I have done now is an additional year of management studies so that I could more easily get into consulting (coming from a law degree).
Most projects I've done relate to operating model transformation. Growth strategy projects come every now and then, but don't seem to be the focus of most clients atm.
I'm not tagged to any industry, but as we're in Belgium/Brussels, the most projects come from Financial Services or Resources & Chemicals. Sometimes you get a project in Consumer Goods & Products or Energy, but it's usually as part of a larger international project. Of course you can always go abroad.
Regarding salary, the figures you find on glassdoor are more or less accurate.
Hope this helps!
