Kellogg or Columbia for MBB (unconventional background)
I come from an unconventional background (architecture) and would like to get into MBB. I am deciding between Columbia and Kellogg. I am from New York and prefer to stay in New York after MBA. That said, I feel Kellogg would give me a better shot of getting into MBB as it can leverage better my background. Any thoughts?
jkap, sorry there are no responses yet. Maybe one of these topics can point you in the right direction:
Hope that helps.
Why would Kellogg better take advantage of your architecture background?
If you're sure you want to be in NYC afterwards then I'd imagine all else equal the B-school in NYC makes more sense, as you can regularly meet up with consultants that actually work in NYC.
There is zero NYC advantage for Columbia over Kellogg for consulting. Any skew in employment data is just self selection. The firms will all fly NYC consultants to Chicago in droves to visit both Kellogg and Booth.
Both schools place very well nationally for consulting, particularly for NY/Chicago/SF. Base your decision on fit.
Never met an architect in B-school before. You might get interviews just for being interesting.
To answer your question, if you want to be in NYC and are in at Columbia and there's no significant cost difference at play, then you're better off at Columbia.
There were a few architects at my MBA, most of them targeting consulting, and I think they ended up getting either MBB or tier 2.
To answer your questions, it makes no difference really for the NYC office which school you go to. Both place very well pretty much in every office in the US. If you are professional in your interactions, and have a decently high GMAT (which I assume is not an issue given the schools you're heading to), you should get at least an interview at MBB with your profile. After that, it's just your case solving and interviewing skills. So just pick the school where you think you'd fit better.
Why do you think Kellogg can leverage your background better?
If you want to stay in NY being in NY during the recruiting season will be helpful. Networking with ppl from MBB offices will be easier. Don’t underestimate the power of a 15 minute coffee chat vs. a phone call.
However meeting folks from the office will only help you to secure the interviews. After you are invited it all comes down to the case.
you made the right call big dog
