Laid off after 7 months | Advice on getting in to MBB

Hi everyone,

I graduated from the University of Toronto in 2017 (B.Comm.) and then joined the CBD program at IBM. It was bad timing as at the year-end, my practice collapsed and I was out, 7 months since I joined. So, I am put in a unique situation where I am not fit for a recent graduate, but also not experienced enough to be an experienced hire. It took quite a while to adjust but now I am fine. So I would like some advice on how to move forward. Specifically, what would be a good position/role/company to target now that would put me in a more competitive position to break into MBB later? What other things would you recommend (learning, networking, etc.)?

Here is a bit of my background: - Have a B.Comm. Degree with a Finance Major, CGPA 3.5 - Passed CFA Level 2 - Performed a B.A. role using design thinking at executive meetings - Worked on a program management proposal - Assisted ERP transformation

Any help or ideas would be useful and greatly appreciated. Thank you!

sounds like you are a good candidate for IB 1st year analyst (your 7 months of experience should help counter the fact that you are not coming from the intern pool).

i would skip the BBs for investment banking (tho maybe other divisions are less competitive)....look into the middle market firms for IB...you'll probably need to network/apply to hundreds of firms to find a combo of available / willing to interview you. You might need to open up your search beyond "investment banking" to include things like project mgmt, biz dev, etc...

1) Reach out via email and linked in...to every firm you can find...look for 15 minute coffee chats (somewhere on here you'll find a good way to go about this) 2) apply to every opening you can find.

While you have some "work experience" it really won't be any more valuable than internship experience...so i would think of it like that. Companies are interviewing now for summer 2019 start...so i would get a move on if i were you.

Since you worked at IBM...i would also learn how to code if you don't know how...start here
