McKinsey Interview and Other Questions

McKinsey's first round interviews claim that I have a 1-hour multiple choice problem solving test. I was wondering if any of you have experiences with this and, if so, how difficult it was. What sort of materials were covered?

Also, when I applied to McKinsey, I listed an international office as my first choice. However, I now wish to work in New York. Would it be possible to change my preference and would this damage my impression to the firm?

Thanks.

OP seemed to be an international. Are you also outside of the US?

I was talking to a few MBB consultants who were still interviewing (about a month ago), and they said it was kids with connections... and they were mostly just interviewing for waitlist positions. No idea if this applies to you though, likely a different situation.

I would ask your recruiter about switching office preferences at your first round interview, unless you have a recruiter contact already. Typically it's difficult to change office preferences because your first round interview selection was dependent partially on those rankings. The best thing to do is discuss with recruiter and feel out the options.

At this stage, McK is hiring interns--not full time. So, while the OP didn't mention it, it's a pretty safe bet he's being considered for McK Summer BA program.

There's no "pass" or "fail"... Use your brain, dude. Your score is taken into consideration, there's no threshold. Anyway, whether you get an offer from McK will depend not on your score but on whether the partners who will interview you think you are worth it.

Btw, their test is a piece of cake in my opinion.

I can personally tell you that they are still recruiting full time because I have an interview later this month. Whether they're hiring is a different story altogether.
