Opinions on the BCG 'online case'

I recently went through the BCG first round assessment. In the office I applied to this consisted of an interview, a maths test and an 'online case'

Has anyone else done the online case? If so, what did you think about it?

I thought the paper was incredibly poorly put together. Being able to answer a question was completely dependent on whether you could answer the previous question(s) presumably thus skewing the marks by unfairly penalising someone who could not answer an early question relative to a late one.

I really don't understand what it was trying to test. As far as I can work out, my test revolved around your ability to interpret and apply a page of acronyms. Perhaps they’ve identified this as an essential skill in consulting.

Overall, the interview process was extremely enjoyable but this test has been bothering me. I'd be interested to hear the thoughts of anyone else who's done it

Yea, the online case isn't really representative of the actual case you'll be doing in the interview, or at least that's how I felt. The key is to start on the right foot though. More than many of my other interviews, it seemed BCG had a very set path it wanted you to follow and if you fail to start with the right framework, you're pretty much screwed. Live cases > The online cases from any of their websites.

I mean.... if COGS is actually the problem but in the first step you identify revenue as the problem, in a real life case you might be able to come up with an A+ solution to increase revenue but at the end of the day that doesn't really help the client.

The grading methodology (from what you described) seems sound IMO.

Can someone give an update on the Online Case? How can one prepare for it best? Does it make sense to have a look at GMAT IR stuff?

Thanks!
