Reapplying after application has been closed

I recently applied to MBB BA role after talking to a current BA and a recruiter at the office I want to work at. Both conversations I had with them sounded hopeful and that I could potentially be a good fit as an experienced hire. I made some adjustments to my resume and applied to the position. Less than 24 hours later, I got an email saying that my application is no longer being considered. Later that same day, I received an email that one of the people I spoke with made a referral for me and invited me to apply.

Should I reapply now that I have the referral? Or is it a bad look since my application was already closed? I feel like they closed it so quickly that I wasn’t even really considered. And now that I have a referral, I have a better chance of them actually reviewing me as a candidate.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights and steps you can consider:

  1. Reapplying with a Referral:

    • Referral Impact: Referrals can significantly boost your chances. Since you now have a referral from someone within the company, it’s worth reapplying. Referrals often lead to a more thorough review of your application.
    • Timing: Given that your application was closed quickly, it’s possible it wasn’t fully reviewed. Reapplying with a referral can help ensure your application gets the attention it deserves.
  2. Addressing the Previous Application:

    • Cover Letter: When reapplying, make sure to include a cover letter that highlights the referral and any changes or improvements you’ve made since your last application. Emphasize why you are now a better candidate.
    • Explanation: Briefly mention that you are reapplying due to the referral and your belief that your initial application may not have been fully considered.
  3. Potential Risks:

    • Perception: While there is a slight risk that reapplying could be seen as desperate, the referral should mitigate this. The referral indicates that someone within the company believes in your potential.
    • Consistency: Ensure that your resume and application materials are consistent and reflect any feedback or improvements since your last application.
  4. Next Steps:

    • Reapply: Go ahead and reapply with the referral. Make sure to follow up with the person who referred you to let them know you’ve reapplied and to thank them for their support.
    • Follow Up: After reapplying, consider following up with the recruiter to confirm that your new application has been received and to express your continued interest in the role.

By taking these steps, you can leverage the referral to improve your chances of being considered for the position. Good luck!
