Regional MBB Office vs T2 Strategy Consulting Firm in T1 City (Full Time)

Hi everyone, I will be interning at a T2 strategy firm (OW/EY-P/L.E.K/etc.) this summer at a T1 city (NYC/SF/etc.) and am looking for advice. It has been my absolute dream to be at MBB and I have a job offer lined up with an MBB regional office (St. Louis/Cleveland/Houston/etc.) for full time. Should I stay at my current T2 strategy firm for full time or go with MBB in a city like the ones mentioned above?

I'm at MBB, so I'm biased, but I think I'd rather go MBB in less prominent city. Reasons are:

  • purchasing power of high salary in cheaper city (NY/SF are exorbitantly expensive, even if they are amazing cities)
  • brand name recognition of MBB itself (although those T2 firms are all excellent in their own right)
  • possibility to transfer to bigger cities later within MBB if I still wished

I was in this same position and chose to stick with the T2 firm in a major city. However, nobody can help you make this decision - as someone who grew up in a city, values having an active social life, and enjoyed their internship at the T2, I figured that the exposure and opportunity that came from living in a major city would benefit me more than 2 years at an MBB.

Gonna be honest dawg, Cleveland and Houston are not it for me, but this is a decision that you have to make for yourself

I started work at a T2 firm in NYC. I had a blast in my 20's, spent WAY too much money, had a great group of friends, met my wife and now am a Partner living in the suburbs with a great family and a great income. I wouldn't trade that in a million years to go back and join MBB in Des Moines or Tampa Bay (unless they also have a cannonball to the Hamptons during the summer).

These are incredibly personal decisions and, unless you have a specific exit strategy you're trying to accomplish, it's hard for anyone to tell you which path to take. If you are truly agnostic to where your friends are, where you'll have fun, etc. then, by all means, take MBB in a T2 city and enjoy the prestige dripping from your every step and the $900/month rent but I don't think anyone can tell you if that's the right choice for you.

As above poster said, it's a personal decision. But Ive had a blast in a T2 city as well at MBB (my first year is wrapping up). I actually think I had way more fun in the "T2" city I currently live in then I would have had in nyc (and I interned in nyc so I know what it's like) because a) I have way more money here while my friends in nyc barely saved anything (nyc will cost 20-30% more than most t2 lcol cities) b) I have a great group of friends and family in the T2 city vs ny didn't know anyone before c) the T2 city offers great nightlife and restaurants as well d) I live literally opposite the street of my office building for only $1200 rent (for a very nice apartment) so no commute. I've also saved enough money to buy my own apartment by the end of next year, which I would not have been able to do in nyc.also, more money = more money to give back to parents and younger siblings, which is important to me. I also personally think nyc is way overhyped and didn't like the summer I spent there because it was very expensive, living conditions suck, the commute is absolutely horrendous and the city is extremely dirty. From a fun perspective, my t2 city offers more than enough nightlife activities and restaurants for me to enjoy. From a professional perspective, nyc would offer more “networking” opportunities but keep in mind consulting makes you travel very often anyways. I'm just saying this to offer an opposing perspective because the above poster is implying that in his opinion you can't have as much fun, make friends, or get a wife in other non nyc cities and that by choosing a non NYC city, you’re sacrificing something big; you can easily have loads of fun, make friends, get married in non NYC cities as well lol. In the past few years dozens of thousands have left nyc for many of the reasons I mentioned above. Also I've realized that your happiness in a city is directly tied to how strong your friend group is. Doesn't matter if nyc has 50 more or "better" clubs than miami if you don't have any friends in nyc, so keep that in mind.In terms of career, MBB is a lot better than T2 NYC in my opinion. At my school at least, everyone took MBB regional office over T2 nyc. When I was making that decision it was between mckinsey in a t2 vs OW in nyc and it was a very easy decision for me. Office location doesn't matter much or at all for MBB exit opps, they pay for b school and an easy path to a top b school, huge network, MBB exit opps are significantly better than T2 (especially if you want to do PE, where they pretty much exclusively recruit MBB) and you can carry the brand name for years. Also if you really want to, you can always transfer office locations later on. In my opinion it would be really hard to turn down an MBB offer for OW/EY or LEK.

Not sure Tampa or Des Moines count as T2 cities. Based on MBB locations, you're rather thinking Denver/ Seattle/ Texas metros/ Charlotte, which can all be nice depending on what you're looking for in life.

Go to New York.

I have friend's who are at an MBB in a T2 city, while true that they saved more money at the beginning, I'm not quickly overtaking them. I've also been able to accelerate my career and open many doors through being here, seriously the networking is like nowhere else. Anyways, all these points in mind, they're wanting to lateral here to NY.

Best of luck.
