Sharing Hotel Rooms and Rental Cars
New to the forum, but I did a search and could not find a solid answer. I'll be starting at a tier 3 consulting firm in the fall, and figured it wasn't kosher to ask anyone at the firm.
How often do junior consultants have to share rooms with others?
If I get staffed in city where public transportation sucks, will I get my own rental car? If not, how does car sharing usually work?
Cars, maybe. At my original (tier 3) firm we shared cars, and it was usually delegated by the Project Manager. Rooms? No way. Your room is your room.
Make sure you sign up for the loyalty program of whatever property your at (Hilton HHonors, Marriott Rewards) so you can rack up points & status in order to be upgraded. Try to stay at Hilton & sign up for the quarterly promos (Google 'HHonors Q3 2013 promotion enrollment, for example) and you'll rack up enough points every 3-4 weeks for a free night. Same goes for flights - if you stick with one airline you should be able to almost always be upgraded to First class.
I second that--you'll never have to share rooms. You might have to share a two-bedroom apartment if they rent an apartment for you, but that's a bit different (and you'll tend to have your own bathroom).

Most people get their own car. You may share if you are on the same flights as someone else on your workstream. Some clients are also very cost conscious and you would share then.
I want to add that it also depends on your level and of course the project budget. From what I observe, project leads seems to always find the budget for their own car. In general, everyone else needs to expect to share a car.

Room-sharing: No firm, ever. Except maybe large training events.
Car-sharing: If convenient. If we have 2 consultants and timing works, we'll share a car. 3-4 consultants and we usually get a 2nd car to have flexibility. If some of the team wants to log off at 7 for dinner and others want to burn through til 10, the 2nd car is very useful. This is only for short, local trips once we're in the client city/area. For regional clients where driving makes more sense than flying or remote ones where it's an hour or more from the airport, we usually cab or town car so we can work in transit. Doesn't matter if it's daily or weekly travel.
