Investor relations to equity research?
Can someone in Investor Relations at a commercial bank make it to Equity Research/Investment Banking? What is the route I would have to take? CFA, Series 63?

Hope that helps.
Thanks for doing all that research and hyperlinking the sources. While these are great sources regarding moving between different roles, it doesn’t directly discuss what someone in Investor Relations must do to make it into M&A.
That’s an auto generated answer from the WSO bot just so you know.
Bump. Also in ir hoping to make a similar move
Stay in IR
Why?
IR is a lot more stable industry. Lots of headwinds facing ER such as secular decline of trading volume, shrinking number of active asset managers and MIFID (EU regulation making payments to ER come from P&L instead of fees to investors).
The glory days of ER were 20+ years ago. You can still learn a lot and pick up valuable skills but ER is not really a place you want to plan for a long-term career.
I worked in investor relations consulting before making the switch to sell side research. Granted I had prior sell side experience (intern).
It can be done. Tout any buyside relationships you have and be prepared to pitch a few stocks. CFA in progress helps too.
