How to prep for credit SA role?

Currently a junior incoming at a credit fund, expected to do HY and private credit work. I want to start prepping, but can't find many resources online, particularly for modeling credit. I want to learn as much as I can that will help me on the job so I can maximize chances of getting the return. I can find lots of stuff for PE/IB, but a lot less for credit and bonds

Are there any sample private/public credit writeups/pitches/models? I've been reading Kricheff's book on credit, but wanted to know if anyone had any other advice or guidance on how they'd recommend prepping for this role for the summer. What should i do between now and June, and are there any resources or sample pitches you'd recommend looking at?

To prepare for a credit summer analyst role, especially one focused on high-yield (HY) and private credit, here’s a structured approach based on the most helpful WSO content:

1. Master Credit-Specific Financial Modeling

  • Focus on Credit Modeling: Unlike traditional equity-focused modeling, credit modeling emphasizes cash flow analysis, debt repayment capacity, and covenant structures. The WSO Free Modeling Series offers lessons on financial statement modeling, DCF, M&A, LBO, and Comps, which are foundational for credit analysis. These can be adapted to focus on credit-specific metrics like interest coverage ratios, leverage ratios, and debt service coverage.
  • Templates and Practice: Utilize the 27 financial modeling templates available in the WSO swipe file. These templates can help you practice building models that are relevant to credit analysis.

2. Understand Credit Writeups and Pitches

  • Sample Writeups: While specific credit writeups or pitches may not be readily available, you can adapt equity research templates to focus on credit metrics. For example, instead of focusing on equity upside, analyze downside protection, recovery rates, and yield.
  • Key Components to Include:
    • Business overview and industry analysis.
    • Financial performance with a focus on cash flow and leverage.
    • Debt structure and covenant analysis.
    • Risk assessment and mitigation strategies.
    • Investment thesis with a focus on yield and risk-adjusted returns.

3. Deepen Your Credit Knowledge

  • Books and Resources: Kricheff’s book is a great start. Complement it with other resources like Moody’s or S&P credit rating methodologies to understand how professionals assess credit risk.
  • WSO Forums: Engage in discussions on the WSO forums related to credit analysis. Threads like "Credit Analyst to PE?" and "MF Liquid Credit vs Private Credit at the Analyst Level" can provide insights into the skills and knowledge required.

4. Practice Analyzing Real-World Credit Scenarios

  • HY Bonds and Private Credit Deals: Read case studies or news articles about recent high-yield bond issuances or private credit deals. Try to analyze the terms, risks, and potential returns.
  • Loan Covenants: Familiarize yourself with common loan covenants and their implications. The WSO thread on "Loan Covenants" can be a helpful starting point.

5. Leverage WSO Resources

  • Mock Interviews and Resume Reviews: Use WSO’s mock interview services to practice credit-specific interview questions. Their resume review services can also help tailor your CV to highlight relevant skills.
  • Networking and Mentorship: Join the WSO Talent Oasis Community to connect with mentors who have experience in credit roles.

6. Timeline for Preparation

  • Now to March: Focus on building a strong foundation in financial modeling and credit analysis. Complete the WSO Free Modeling Series and practice using the templates.
  • April to May: Start working on sample credit writeups and pitches. Seek feedback from mentors or peers.
  • June: Review and refine your knowledge. Stay updated on market trends in high-yield and private credit.

By following this roadmap and utilizing the resources available through WSO, you’ll be well-prepared to excel in your summer analyst role and maximize your chances of securing a return offer.
