JPM CIB Credit Risk

Just accepted a full time role at JPM doing CIBCredit Risk for Leveraged Finance Sub Investment Grade Healthcare sector in a HCOL city. Work directly with LevFin, Coverage and DCM.  We are a more technical IB facing team, we are directly on deals, work with the IB team. 294@ on DCFs and LBOs. What will my salary look like? What is the bonus for that team? What is the salary progression like for Associates, VPs, ED, and MD? My analyst starting salary is 100K

What are my possible exit opportunities? Private Credit at Ares, Oaktree, or Apollo? Hedge Fund? PE?, Can I lateral into DCM or LevFin (Prefer LevFin) at JPM or another bank? What are the hours like? I am curious mainly about salary progression and bonus percentage outlook and opportunities to lateral. Please help!!!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know about your role and progression in JPM CIB Credit Risk:

Salary and Bonus Progression

  1. Analyst Level:

    • Starting salary: $100K (as you mentioned).
    • Bonus: Typically lower than IB. For analysts, bonuses are at a slight discount to IB, around $5K less. First-year bonuses can range from $30K (median) to $55K (top performers).
  2. Associate Level:

    • Base salary: $105K for 1st-year associates (recently reduced from $125K).
    • Bonus: Significantly lower than IB. The disparity grows as you move up the ranks.
  3. VP, ED, and MD Levels:

    • While specific numbers aren't detailed in the dataset, the gap between Credit Risk and IB compensation widens significantly post-associate years. IB roles generally offer much higher bonuses and total comp at these levels.

Exit Opportunities

  • Private Credit: Exits to top credit funds like Ares, Oaktree, and Apollo are common, especially given your exposure to LevFin and DCM.
  • Private Equity: While possible, it's less common compared to credit-focused exits.
  • Hedge Funds: Direct HF exits are rare from Credit Risk.
  • Internal Lateral Moves:
    • Moving into LevFin or DCM is possible but requires significant networking. Be prepared to take a step back in seniority (e.g., losing a year) if you transfer internally to IB.
    • JPM values internal mobility, so leveraging your relationships with LevFin and DCM teams can help.

Hours

  • Generally better than IB. Efficient analysts can leave by 10-11 PM on most weekdays unless there's a live deal. However, hours can spike during busy periods.

Key Considerations

  • Lateral Moves: If LevFin is your ultimate goal, networking within JPM is crucial. The firm supports internal mobility, but you'll need to demonstrate strong performance and build relationships with the IB teams.
  • Bonus Outlook: Bonuses in Credit Risk are consistently lower than IB, and the criteria for bonuses focus on business results, teamwork/leadership, and communication rather than a letter-grade system.
  • Long-Term Progression: If you're aiming for higher comp and broader exit opportunities, transitioning to LevFin or DCM earlier in your career might be advantageous.

You’ll be able to lateral into any of those opportunities you mentioned if you put the work in. Salary progression is like $130-$140k for associates I believe. And bonuses are group dependent but I think associates can expect somewhere between $70-90k+ depending on individual and group performance.

JPM Credit is not paying associates 70k to 90k for bonuses - there’s a whole thread on how they recently haircut comp a few years ago…

I have a direct connection who left JPM credit risk for another gig… they absolutely do pay that. $90k+ bonus for top tier associates at good groups and a low end of range at $65-70k based on performance / group activity level. Total comp range of $200-$260k for Associates across different levels and groups.

JPM is one of the few groups on the street that separates out corporate credit risk from lev fin. Strong credit standards, hours can be tough at times. Solid pay.
