Oaktree Global Opportunities

Can anyone share their views on this group? Saw they have a very large fund and was wondering what their general reputation in the industry is (returns, culture, deployment).

Also if anyone has any views on the LA and NYC office dynamic and how integrated they are?

Oaktree's Global Opportunities Fund is highly regarded in the industry, particularly as their flagship distressed and special situations vehicle. Here's what you need to know:

  1. Fund Size and Mandate:

    • The Opportunities Fund manages a significant pool of capital, with the latest fund (Opps XI) reportedly at $15 billion.
    • It operates with an extremely flexible mandate, deploying capital globally, across sectors, and throughout the capital structure (from 1st lien senior secured debt to equities).
  2. Reputation and Returns:

    • Oaktree is known for its disciplined investment approach and strong performance in distressed and special situations. The firm has a stellar reputation for navigating liquid situations effectively.
    • While the distressed market has tightened, Oaktree remains a top-tier player in this space, leveraging its scale and expertise.
  3. Culture:

    • The group is leanly staffed, which means significant exposure and responsibility for team members. This can be both a challenge and an opportunity, depending on your career goals.
    • The culture is often described as professional and rigorous, with a focus on delivering consistent returns.
  4. Office Dynamics (LA vs. NYC):

    • The LA office is Oaktree's headquarters and serves as the firm's central hub. It likely has a more significant influence on strategy and decision-making.
    • The NYC office, while important, may be more focused on execution and regional opportunities. The integration between the two offices is expected to be strong, given Oaktree's global and collaborative approach.

If you're considering a role or partnership with Oaktree, their reputation, scale, and disciplined investment strategy make them a standout in the distressed and special situations space.
