Equity Research Associate Interview
Hi guys,
I got an interview for an equity associate research position at a BB. Wondering what kind of questions I could expect.
My background: Bachelor's in humanities, master's in finance, CFA LII Candidate, no finance experience, my last job experience was in the government sector as a political analyst, trying to break into finance.

They will ask why equity research or why sell-side research

I'm a 15 year veteran in Big pharma with heavy business analysis experience.
I interviewed for a few healthcare associate positions at a BB and they called me back quickly for a second round and writing and modeling test next week.
Any thoughts on what the test might be comprised of.

On the modeling front, they will want to see how proficient with Excel you are. Probably creating a simple DCF and a comps sheet. You may also be asked to "troubleshoot" an existing spreadsheet (find the deliberate errors).
Writing style is very subjective but they will be looking for your ability to convey your ideas in a clear and easy to read manner under some time pressure. You may be asked to take some recent company results and write up a short comment on the main points.
If you have samples of reports that you have written that you think are quite good (and you are allowed to show them) then bring those along as well.

ER Associate Interview - Second Round, Same Interviewer (Originally Posted: 04/19/2012)
I realize this is last minute, but I figured I would ask anyway.
I had a first round interview with a Research Analyst earlier this week. He invited me to interview with him again later this week (tomorrow).
I pitched a stock during my first interview with him (and answered various behavioral and commitment questions), but I am unsure what else he could ask me during my second round with him - any thoughts?
I'm thinking a sell idea...but should I have another stock pitch prepared, just in case? I am taking a modeling test afterwards, so I don't think he will grill me on the technicals since that will be covered by the exam.

Have several other long stock ideas prepared (1 large-cap,1 mid, 1 small/micro) and be ready to talk about the difference b/t growth and value investing as well as ratios like p/e, p/b, etc.

So, I've got an Equity Research Associate interview next week with the Analyst that I would be supporting. I'm told he's been covering the alternative energy equities for quite some time now, so I think it is safe to assume he is at least in his 30s.
I am fully aware that I will need to be prepared to pitch stocks, and this is where my inquiry comes in... First, here's the rub: I'm currently a corporate accountant, but I have prior Summer Analyst experiences over two summers. I HATE my current job. With a passion, might I add. I desperately want to get this job, and I want to show how dedicated I am to preparing for it. Also, I came out of undergrad from a top 20 undergrad b-school, dual-concentration with (unfortunately) only a cum laude recognition.
So, does anyone think it would be inappropriate to show up to this interview with stocks ready to pitch and short slide decks (presentations) for each stock I pitch.
I'm thinking of the standard boilerplate pitch (5-15 seconds per slide) for each stock: -Intro (Company, investment thesis) -Company Summary -Company competitive advantages -Trends supporting my thesis -Risks threatening my thesis and mitigation for those risks -Quick valuation analysis (thinking of doing full DCF and comps for multiples; but if it proves too time consuming, might just compare company multiples with public comps). -Repeat thesis -Questions
Is that like....too ridiculous? Thoughts before I jump into a 20 hour endeavor??
Showing up with some stock ideas is a great idea. However, unless they specifically ask you to do so, showing up with slides will come off as over the top in my opinion. We had one guy do this in an interview and it was quite awkward, maybe it was just him though. I would have your pitches ready in your head and be prepared to discuss them in depth.
