GS Portfolio Strategy Intern (under Global investment research, Macro Research)

Hey guys, I’m interviewing for this role in HK for APEJ.
Seems like my interviewers are: equity portfolio strategist, ED (China Equity Port strat) ED (APAC Port Strat)

My understanding is that this is equity (index) focused along with multi asset. And there are requirements for stats and coding.

Do you guys know what questions might come up? Appreciate any insights and thanks in advance!!

For a GS Portfolio Strategy Intern role under Global Investment Research (Macro Research) in Hong Kong, here’s what you should prepare for based on the most helpful WSO content:

  1. Equity and Multi-Asset Focus:

    • Be ready to discuss equity index strategies and multi-asset allocation. You might be asked to analyze or interpret market trends, portfolio performance, or macroeconomic indicators.
    • Prepare to explain how you would approach constructing or optimizing a portfolio based on specific market conditions.
  2. Statistics and Coding:

    • Expect technical questions involving statistical analysis. Brush up on regression analysis, time series forecasting, and other quantitative methods relevant to portfolio strategy.
    • Coding skills are likely to be tested. Be proficient in Python, R, or any other relevant programming language. You might be asked to write or debug code for tasks like portfolio optimization or data analysis.
  3. Behavioral and Situational Questions:

    • Prepare for questions like:
      • "Why are you interested in portfolio strategy and macro research?"
      • "Describe a time you used data to solve a complex problem."
      • "How would you handle conflicting priorities in a fast-paced environment?"
  4. China and APAC Market Knowledge:

    • Since your interviewers include specialists in China and APAC portfolio strategy, demonstrate a strong understanding of these markets. Be ready to discuss recent trends, challenges, and opportunities in the region.
  5. Case Studies or Practical Scenarios:

    • You might be given a case study or scenario to analyze. For example:
      • "How would you adjust a portfolio strategy in response to a sudden interest rate hike in China?"
      • "What factors would you consider when recommending an equity index strategy for APAC markets?"
  6. General Tips:

    • Review your resume thoroughly and be prepared to discuss any relevant experience in detail.
    • Practice explaining complex concepts clearly and concisely, as communication skills are critical in this role.

Good luck with your interview!
