IM to ER FT Recruiting
Hi everyone,
I’m a rising senior at a target state school and I’ve secured a summer internship in the Investment Management division of a large global asset manager (think BNY / State Street / Fidelity).
While I’m excited about the "Buy-Side" experience, my long-term goal is actually Sell-Side Equity Research. I really enjoy the deep-dive aspect of following a specific sector and the process of publishing research.
I have a few questions for those in the industry:
1. Recruiting Timeline: When does full-time ER recruiting typically kick off for Chicago/NYC? Is it "just-in-time" or more structured like IB?
2. Skill Gap: What should I focus on most this summer to make myself a competitive FT candidate? I'll be working on investment memos, but should I be building my own independent models/pitches on the side? Any certifications I should look at?
Thank you!
Keep your head clear going into the internship, you never know you might end up loving it and it sounds like a great role. FT ER recruiting is very case by case basis with the firms and what seats are open. Keep in touch with your network/grow it and let them know you are looking to switch over to SS ER. I know firms like JPM, wells have sometimes opened up FT programs but availability is always a question mark. Hope this helps, GL
Congrats on BNY
lol came here to say this too as soon as I saw BNY bucketed with Fidelity
