Interview...

I have my first interview for an equity research intern this week. I have worked extremely hard to get here and I am a little nervous. Was wondering if anyone has any tips/ideas for the interview. What type of questions should I be prepared for etc. Any help means a lot to me! I want this more than everything.

ER interview:

  • fit / behavioral: why equity? why sell-side? what's your story? what skills do you bring? how you work? etc.
  • technical: similar to investment banking but slightly more emphasis on valuation and business than on accounting
  • stock pitch: know your company cold, understand the risks, deliver it concisely and then defend the Q&A

Good luck.

Asked head of research at a well known bank about what makes a candidate stand out when he looks for research analysts/associates:

“Charm”

It goes beyond the ability to speak well, analyze well, even looking good or overall polished. Can you lure an investor into an engaging conversation about a stock? Pique someone’s interest? Make your audience gravitate towards the story you want them to know. Once you have all the technicals down, it’s this level 2 stuff that sets you apart. After all, the bulk of ER analyst’s job is spent on marketing to buyside thru 1-on-1s. Can you generate trading revenue?
