Most promising new industries for equity research?
Current undergrad strongly considering going into equity research. What are the most promising/highest growth sectors or industries for a new equity research associate to cover and build a franchise in? I've heard that it's hard to build a franchise in sell side ER covering established industries, like oil and gas because there are too many older analysts inside them. I've heard about cannabis, space travel, and renewables, but what other promising industries are out there?
It's hard to build a franchise, period. True even in emerging industries because of politics.
Cannabis can go to CPG analyst if he/she asks for it. I have seen energy analysts expand / pivot into renewables. Space travel can go to transport analyst. Online casino / sports betting go to the gaming analyst, etc.
Software (there are a million names to cover these days across multiple subsectors), Autos (a ton of new hot companies have come to market the last two years and the industry is undergoing a transformation which means the more senior guys have less of an "edge) and Renewables would make the most sense to me.
Healthcare - biotech
Space I imagine will become big in the next couple years
