Find out what equity research reports look like and start writing some. They don't need to be long, just insightful and technically correct. There are plenty of resources and to be honest it's not all that hard. Pick 1 or 2 sectors and then make high quality applications to all the research roles in those sectors emphasising your in-depth knowledge. Be patient and keep learning. Eventually you will get it. Might not be a BB at first, but once you're in you can always transfer across after showing good performance.
What kind of sources can I use to write an equity research report? Also what kind of financial modelling would I need to know for equity research?
Firstly, if you get into ER, it'll be sell side not buy side. Secondly, a subpar GPA from a non-target makes this even tougher, especially with no internship.
My advice: go to as many small funds as you can and offer to intern for free. Absent this under your belt I think there's no way you get into research.
