Transition from rotational credit risk to ER?
Title. I’ve been offered a management development program at midsize bank. I would love to do ER as my end all goal but have lower GPA and Non target and a buddy said credit risk would be a good starting place. Is that true? Is a management development program going to hurt me long term?
Credit risk is not a good starting place to get into ER. It just isn’t. For every credit risk person, there’s another ER person the same age with a CFA and any other credentials you can get. And it’s not like ER is a booming part of finance as it’s not really a revenue-generating area of a bank.
If you want to get into ER, start in ER. That being said, credit risk is better than nothing and it’s not impossible to transfer to ER later, just unlikely.
Thank you! Are there any front office roles that are transitional able from credit risk or not really? Thank you!
If the bank has a corporate banking arm, sometimes corporate banking.
Even DCM occasionally.
