Slow bank holiday night, so I figured I would go into this. After having followed watch brand for some years and having had countless conversation with fellow consultants and banking friends about why you don't spend your first bonus on a fucking mixed steel-gold submariner, I figured a brief guide about watches may help.
DISCLAIMER: I know that a large majority of people won't care and neither will the large majority of co-workers, but some might and looking like a knob to those who cares is the worst way to start a career. I also want to state that these watches are my personal preference - this is in no way an objective review so please avoid the Monkey Shit for having left out your favourite Tissot model.
Whilst some of you may have read the GSElevator guide to watches on Wall Street, I think it does a poor job and offers the same insight into watches as someone who went on the Richemont Group's website for the first time and memorised some names. Regardless, here goes:
Intern
You're tucked away at the back of the office and the only people you see are your fellow interns and the raging face of associates and VPs as they shit down your neck for having put an extra comma on slide 37 of 80. Your salary isn't bad, but you can't exactly go eating lobster and caviar whenever you please. You've spent the last 12 hours building a model and aligning logos on a deck you'll never see again and are counting the minutes until the clock strikes 2am and you can finally go home for those well deserved 3-4 hours of nightmare-fuelled sleep. You need something that clearly shows the fading seconds.

Oris Divers Sixty-Five (~$2000): neat, simple, small and under the radar whilst maintaining good visibility and a clean dial.

You got the offer, accepted it and now can do endure the daily barraging on a full time basis. Yet, it feels different to know someone out there looked past the hungover mornings during the internship, the awkward attempted hookups with the smoke show intern and the constant fuck ups to give you an offer. You feel proud, confused and scared at the same time. You've already endured 3 months of this so you have an idea of how things work, plus you'll get to go Sean Penn on some interns in a few months. Still, you're mostly at your desk but can carry yourself with a bit more confidence than you did during the summer. Go on. Treat yourself.

Rolex Datejust Stainless Steel (~$7800): finally, you can get a Rolex. To those asking 'when the fuck can I buy a submariner?' the answer is whenever - just never wear it to the office. This is a personal taste, but with the plethora of models Rolex offers, the best suit watch has to be the datejust. Simple and elegant, yet a bit more noticeable without the big 'fuck you' bezel of the submariner.

Omega De Ville (~$3300): similar to the Zenith mentioned above, the simple dial and design allows it to blend in with formal suits perfectly. Some may prefer better known Omegas (speedmaster, seamaster etc) but again, I wouldn't wear them with a suit.

You officially have errand boys! Slowly rising up the ranks, grinding away hard as always and now allowed to look at clients in the face, this is your time to shine. Salary gets bigger, bonus gets bigger, office hours shrink (slightly) and more people start to notice you. Why? You have responsibility. You're teaching the apes below you simple tasks and if they fuck up, as much as you can shit on them later, you'll be shit on first. Make sure you can fit the big boy pants with a big boy watch. A word of caution here. Since you'll have pretty good money at this stage, it's easy to fall into temptation and go full Lil Wayne with a shit flashy watch. Do the research, ask friends. At this budget, there are plenty of watches you can buy.

Blancpain Villeret (~$14000): this is a family of Blancpain models and variants exist discontinued on the 2nd hand market or brand new. Either way, this watch shows fellow watch enthusiasts you certainly have taste and if you don't care what others think, enjoy the fact you're wearing a phenomenal watch from one of the oldest brands in the world

It is at this point in the rankings that the GS Elevator article mentions the rule that you can wear a Daytona only from VP level up. Is this true? No clue. Either way, if it is then go out and get a steel one to join the thousands of others who have no idea what to do with $15000. Great watch by all accounts, just simple. You can do better.

Vacheron Constantin Patrimony (~$25000): This is a big purchase. Again, this is a family of models and the lower end models cost around this much. You're wearing one of the brands that brought Swiss watchmaking to life on an international level. It's time to start looking at the big brands, but the non-traditional models.

I have never really been much of a watch guy, but want to buy one for an upcoming internship. Since my budget is quite limited, I did some research and ended up liking the Seiko SKX007. Thinking about putting a nato strap on it to make it a bit more unique (the black/grey one seems nice).

Four watches that I really like and would add to around analyst level watches are the following:
Omega Speadmaster (Moonwatch): simple, lean, beautiful, brilliant 'story' of the watch
JLC Reverso: again very simple, cool story (invented for polo players who used to break the glass of the watch while playing), very very classic watch (I know some people hate it - I love it)
Glashütte Senator Excellence: simple and elegant watch
IWC Portuguese Chronograph: again a nice elegant watch
Great watches! I didn't include the reverso because square or rectangular watches are 1. very specific in terms of taste and 2. hard to pull off.

Retails for 1.5k, but I got it for $300 by carefully monitoring fluctuations in price for about a year and snagging it when several sales were on at once. Fantastic purchase, gets lots of compliments and is a quality-crafted timepiece.
While it is not a brand that a watch connoisseur would immediately recognize, I think the brand's value will only increase in coming years. The company has actually been around since the 1800s, and was purchased/revived in the late 20th century.

I love Tudor and how well the brand flies under the radar. The Oris 65 is the same size as a Submariner (both 40mm and ~13mm tall) and has a similar style, so I am not sure why you are opposed to the submariner?
Personally I feel that the submariner is recognised a lot more and the dial is packed for its size (hence why it looks bigger than the Oris's clearner dial).

Unfortunately for you, whether true or not, an intern that walks in with a Patek on his wrist, Ferragamo shoes, and a Tom Ford briefcase is going to get branded as a spoiled kid with rich parents who doesn't need the job and is more likely than not to be relatively lazy. You can do great work and overcome the stereotype, but you'll be starting behind your peers in terms of perception.
Bankers LOVE the middle class or poor Midwestern kid story because they think those kids will be resilient grinders and that their story will play well in front of clients. So even if you're self made, you should make sure to dress closer to what an analyst could normally afford than not.

I say buy an apple watch which as ten times the functionality of any of these for a fraction of the price.
Same thing could be said about anything. Why fly business class instead of economy on planes? All they do is get you from A to B. And why spend $500 on a suit? All it does is cover you and does the same job as a $100 suit.
Watch enthusiasts don't look at watches as a tool to tell the time. That's perhaps 10% of what they seek. You look for brands with a history, the look, the quality, durability (most solid watches last 20-30 years if taken care of) and the handcrafted work. This last one doesn't apply to some of the mass market brands like rolex and omega but applies to others like A. Lange & Sohne, Patek Philippe and Vacheron Constantin. Plenty of other brands which sell lower price watches are also like this.

I have an old school Khaki Navy automatic that a GF gave me about a 15 years ago. It still keeps great time and runs well(ETA 2824-2). I have also bought multiple people Hamilton watches as gifts. I think they are great watches at the price point.
I'd say that watch value should match income.
Less Than $150,000
Spend ~ $3000-$4000 or less on a watch. Stick to Tudor, Omega, Nomos, Seiko, maybe a Rolex. Some of the brands mentioned will have to be vintage or used, but still, if you're going to spend money, do so on legitimate companies and watches. Wearing any of those watches will respectfully say that you know what you're doing, but you're not over the top.
Less Than $70,000. At this point, I would keep it simple. Probably stick to cheaper watches like lower end Seikos (which are still amazing btw).
Lastly, don't spend money on a watch just because you can. Anybody who knows about watches that ends up talking to you about your wrist watch will tell right away if you're a noob who bought it for the sake of attention. Buy what you can actually talk about.
I feel like more and more people are moving towards a smartwatch.. So much cheaper and the fact you have access to your whole schedule is a huge plus.

My unqualified, but more realistic advice is:
Intern: Casio, Hugo Boss, Tommy Hilfiger, Timex, (nothing really more than 300). You could also go for a clean smartwatch, just make sure it's not actually delivering any notifications because you almost certainly don't have any important notifications (meme tagging aside). Don't buy a fuckin Dan Wellington, every watch in this price range costs $2 to produce, don't buy the one that has the least brand value behind it.
Analyst: Tissot/Seiko/Perhaps move up to something with an ETA movement in it - but definitely not much point blowing more than like 1.5K
Late stage Analyst/Associate something like an entry level IWC/Rolex/Breitling/Nomos/Glasshutte. Would tend to still go for Pilot watches, metal wrist straps and Rollys attract a bit of attention and sometimes you can rub a simple minded client the wrong way if they think you're trying to flex on them.

Wearing something beyond your means / before you've had a few bonuses and proven yourself just puts a target on your back for others to make assumptions about you, like "entitled rich kid" or "poser". Very little upside to wearing an expensive watch too early ("oh, nice watch") vs significant downside, particularly if you're still learning the ropes ("why the hell is this kid wearing a $5k watch when he's still fucking up on my pitches").

Assuming you are a killer MD with an after tax bonus of around 300K, you are an idiot for buying once of those watches. To be frank, watches are pretty stupid in a practical sense, are not comfortable, and only matter when you are with prestige oriented annoying people who stare it for more than 30 seconds to figure out the brand because they can't tell the difference between a 3K and 15K watch. Buy a Nice Omega or Rollie and take the extra 95K to retire a year earlier where you can try and retain some of the years you lost sucking down cocktails with clients after consecutive nights of 3 hours of sleep with no exercise.
As an intern there's little to no chance I'm shelling out over $1k on a watch (at least not until the end of the summer). I really do love watches but as a 21 y/o I think most of us are not quite "watch enthusiasts" yet (or have the financial means to be one).

Good job on perpetuating the disturbing rhetoric that investment banking is still a man's world. It is frankly ridiculous that you would spend the time and effort to compile this list and not include at least one option per level for the opposite sex in the industry.
I found the price ranges for each IB level ridiculous more than anything (everyone's buying range should be moved down 1-2 spaces, I have yet to see an MD walk around with a $100k watch).
But not having women options listed is not something I would find offensive (speaking as a woman). First off, watch selection for women is pretty dank vs. what's available for men. It's a lot of adding jewels to the bezel and/or dial, which I personally find a bit tacky. Interestingly, a lot of women that like watches (and know watches) actually go for men's models like Rolex subs. Or take fairly masculine looking watches - like Panerai's - and switch out the band for something more colorful (I've seen it with say red leather bands and it looks quite nice). Otherwise, if we're talking more elegant options, it's just usually the smaller version of classics (like smaller sized JLC Reverso's or smaller Cartier Tank's). But buying a women's watch outside of those classics kinda sucks cause the grey market isn't nearly as liquid as the men's market, and the designs, as I mentioned, are a bit tacky / less clean vs the men's models. Or the watch industry assumes women prefer quartz (for convenience/ not needing to reset the watch), which is not necessarily untrue (I'm sure a lot of women don't care about movement and prefer not having to reset the time or whatever), but it's a huge generalization. And I certainly wouldn't pay good money for a quartz model.
In short, it's difficult to suggest women's watches - unless you know the audience (not care about movement? Like flashy bling? Prefer elegance? Prefer good movements and maintain value? Etc)

I wear a Tudor Black Bay (black bezel) most days. Fantastic quality automatic watch that certainly flies under the radar. It pairs just as perfectly with a suit as it does casual attire, and doesn't break the bank either.

IMO some great watches I recommend for intern/frugal analyst level would be: -Orient bambino, really well made nice looking watch for 300 bucks -Tudor black bay 41, understated watch with great build quality. Uses an ETA movement so servicing will be cheaper.
For Tudor it's not ETA anymore, they moved to in-house movements for the BB line even older models.
You should get the ETA versions though - lower cost to service and more importantly, slightly thinner than the inhouse case. For such a thick watch, with those slab sides, it makes a difference.
The prices should probably be shifted down here for each category. Regardless, good on you, you picked some great and unique watches for this post.

I think you'd be surprised by how many people opt for sportier watches, the OP is overwhelming dress watch oriented. A lot of rolex wearing people in finance will wear subs, gmts, daytonas. The patek wearing people will rock a nautilus or aquanaut (amazing), and the AP fans will def choose royal oaks over the jules dress watch you've shown. And yea MDs or senior people spending that much on ONE watch is not the norm at all. They will more likely have a collection of several 20-30k range watches that they have bought over the years rather than one 100k + watch

Stowa's movement has been criticized at that price point and it takes months to actually receive the watch. QC has gone way down due to issues trying to scale their business.

What about as an after work watch?
I'm thinking about getting a new watch with my bonus and was looking for some opinions. I was looking to spend no more than $1000. I'm not crazy big into underlying mechanics but would enjoy a watch that tells time well without too much effort on my part.
I also like really like the black-faced stainless steel rolex submariner (obviously not paying for that but just want to give another data point).
I like it. black on black on black always looks cool.
I would like it more if it had a chronograph, but it looks really nice. 10+ positive reviews is always a good thing when you can't see it in person.
it's a nice watch but it looks a bit too intense to be worn with work clothes. gunmental color scheme... green phosphorescence...
Not a fan of black steel. If you like that scheme, I'd go with black dial and black leather band.
Personally, I would never buy a watch in the $750 - $2,500 price range. Why? The quality in this range is okay for the amount of money you will spend. I'd personally rather have two $400 - $500 than one $1,000 watch because the difference in quality between the two is marginal.

Victorinox watches dont do it for me... though i love their knives!
There are cooler brands out there for that price... Edox, used ebel, elini, oris, zenith, hamilton, tissot, seiko, bulova accutron, just to name a few... even Invicta you can easily get a swiss made valjoux 7750 automatic chronograph for under $1000.
I like it- the black on black's very sleek. Although I wish the face were sleeker as well (ie thinner hands and maybe not the dots ..)
Its not really dressy enough man. Same in silver you could get away with but I think that's too sporty for me.
I think these are good quality watches, but are priced at the upper range of what I think they are worth. I'm not a watch guru, but as someone pointed out, the quality of a $1,000 watch probably isn't going to be any better than that of a well selected $500 watch...because you are getting very similar movements in some cases.
With that said, it is a bit more sporty than most of the folks are going to like here. I actually have a Victorinox and I like it a lot. I wear it everyday and it has held up very well. I get compliments on it fairly often. It was originally priced around $1,000 but I picked it up for about $350. I don't think it's necessarily worth $1,000 so I would have never paid that much but I do think I got a great bargain at $350.

I think it meets the balance between nice looking and not flashy so wouldn't potentially get on anyones nerves.
It looks fine. I am not a huge fan of Tag's, but that looks rather sporty.
I don't understand this idea that you can't wear a nice watch as a junior banker which gets parroted on WSO all the time. Get whatever watch you like because no one else is going to care. In the off chance someone does take notice of your "flashy" watch it's most likely because that person is into watches.
This is very similar to my Tag that I usually wear into work. I think it looks good, and isn't too flashy.
Nobody will ever care (as long as you don't have a diamond-studded gold watch). I was wearing an Omega Speedmaster everyday during my internship and I don't think than anyone even noticed it.

Certainly acceptable in the workplace but you should have tailored shirts as they are quite chunky.
You should probably spend your money on something that you are passionate about though.
The El Primero was at one time the most respected chronograph movement available.
Zenith's a great watch. It's a lot like a Lange. Almost nobody will recognize it, but the people who do will know it's a fantastic piece of craftmanship.

Tungsten Watch...Too Flashy (literally)..as in reflective? (Originally Posted: 10/13/2007)
So I have been toying with the idea of getting this Movado watch for a while. It is made out of a substance called Tungsten Carbide. For those of you that are unfamiliar with it, it is perhaps the most scratchproof metal you can get it a watch. I have a ring made out of Tungsten, and you simply cannot scratch it. I have taken a pair of pliers to this thing, and it will dent the tool without leaving a mark on the ring.
I want a watch made out of the same substance because I tend to beat the hell out of my watches. With this watch, it will look brand new even after years of wear. The one problem is that it is VERY reflective. When you clean it, it shines like a mirror. That leads me to the main drawback. I just started work for a hedge fund that is straigt casual all the time. This means the watch will show all day long since I will be rolling short sleeves a lot. Anyone else think this might be just a bit too flashy for a work setting, or am I just being paranoid.

Who said anything about the Hublot Big Bang (or any watch for that matter) being overpriced? Oh yes, it was you - maybe someone needs a little self-justification? I don't give two $hits whether you worry about the relative value of the stuff you buy. If you can afford it and it floats your boat then knock yourself out.
What I have an issue with is the portrayal of a watch as a solid investment - they aren't. End of. It would have to be a pretty friggin rare watch, and you'd have to hold onto it for a long time for any significant appreciation. In the meantime, you have the time value of money working against you (sorry), the cost of maintenance, and a cotton wool encased sleeve to make sure it doesn't hit anything.
Yes, there are some very special watches in the world which could be considered "art" but a mass-produced Hublot will not even come close.
The only watch that has consistently had a resale value above retail is the stainless Daytona and that's more to do with a deliberate restriction of supply.
And one final thing, I'm guessing Antiquorum is the same place that was recently busted for colluding with the manufacturers to inflate the perceived second-hand values of their watches?
So, in summary, I'll take the hard way please.

It's one of those situations where I could have argued for the sake of arguing, but really I could care less about Tungsten watches, Hublot Big Bang watches (overpriced, flashy, too sporty for work), watch appreciation, watch cost/value/price (that could be a great conversation though), arguing for the sake of arguing, et cetera. I just happen to have some knowledge about timepieces.

I dont think it matters what type of watch someone wears, as long as they produce.
Tag Heuer watches are fine, but in my opinion are too sporty for work.
More importantly, one shouldn't be worried about what watch you're wearing to an interview. As long as it's presentable you'll be fine and no one will judge you for it. Trust me, interviewers will know you're still living on a college budget and buying the 'right' watch should be the least of your worries.
Agreed that this is true for most TAG watches, but I think some of them (e.g., the basic silver ones without 2-3 separate chrono dials) look pretty nice.
A Movado watch is more than fine. I wore a $300 Seiko (costs considerably less than the Movado you described) to four rounds of interviews to my full-time pre-MBA position at a BB. It didn't prevent me from getting the job and I never felt ashamed to wear the watch either.
I think that on a pre-MBA level, those people who get too caught up the value of watches are clearly more preoccupied with style rather than substance, and with charisma rather than character. Wearing a nice watch doesn't define your ability to be successful, or vice versa.
Generally, I'm for performance over appearance. But sometimes, appearance IS performance.
Wear whatever watch you want.
First of all, wear the watch you like. Who cares what anyone else says about it?
My PERSONAL issue with Movado and Tag are that they're all about branding (well, maybe a bit about design). You pay $2000 for a watch that is basically the same guts as a $200 Seiko - it's a quartz movement.
You buy a nice automatic, and that's a miniature work of art. All the little springs and gears working together, finished with an artisan's eye for perfection. Who cares that it's not as accurate as a computer driven quartz? It's a magnificent piece of engineering and craftsmanship.
Even a Breitling or Omega automatic, which run on modified ETA movements represent have an intense amount of work put into customizing that little mechanical heartbeat. And for about the same price as a Breit, Omega, Tag or Movado quartz!
There are plenty of affordable (sub-$1000) automatics I'd pick any day of the week over any quartz watch, but that's because the movement is important to me. To most people it's not. I'd probably take a $50-100 Casio g-shock over most watches you can buy for less than $3000, because the g-shock is an unapologetic tool watch. It's designed for a specific purpose, and nobody does it better especially at that price.
