Wall Street Barbers

I've been seeing people talking about going bald at the Thin Hair - Limited to Style thread, and it got me thinking about aggregating barber picks from our fellow WSO Users.

It might be hype, but I hear these three are Legendary WS Barbers in NY: (Cut is ~$60)

• Joe Provenzano (212)-248-3939
- New Street Barber Shop
- Mon - Fri
- 7:30am to 5:30pm

• Salvatore Anzalone (212)-742-8254 (Cuts Blankfein & Paulson)
- Salvatore Barber Shop
- Mon - Fri
- 8am to 6pm

• Niall Costello (212)-349-5064 (Shop that Cut JP Morgan Jr.)
- Esquires of Wall Street
- Mon - Fri
- 7am - 6pm

Who are you're favorite barbers, at what city, and what's the typical charge?

Frank's in Greenwich Village on Thompson.

$20 in n out in 20 minutes.

are you white/asian/black, etc? i'm asking because i never let a white person touch my hair, and i know a lot of asian kids who agree with me.

I get all of my fancy hair cuts at FSC in the West Village. I highly recommend them for when you feel lke stepping it up a notch ($42 plus tip).

$42 for a haircut? No way

Then just go to a barber and pay the standard $12-$15 for a haircut. There are normal barbershops all over the place, but there are very few "nice" barbershops who'll actually care about your hair at that price.

(I used to scoff at paying more than $15 too.)

FSC Barbers on Horatio if you know what's up.

have to reference one of my favorite WSO quotes of all time here...

"Marcus_Halberstram"

Go to the Vidal Sassoon salon. Ask for a male stylist as no female has a touch quite like theirs. When they ask what you want, just tell them "you can have your way with me." They'll probably give you some fruit cake hairstyle and then slather your butt hole with pomade and ram you with their meat stick, but its a small price to pay for such a valuable lesson: get a fucking personality, get your haircut however you like, if you dont know/care, just walk into any decent hair cutting place and tell them what your problem is and that you want them to fix it. Jesus.

If you don't keep your hair in a short crew cut (there are other acceptable conservative styles) you probably want to shell out the $40.

In midtown, the place in Le Parker Meridian and Jerry's in Rock Center. Blind barber is interesting (cocktail bar out back, barber in the front) but I wouldn't get regular haircuts there.

Alternatively, get a John Allen's membership, worth it if you are actually going every 2-3 weeks and not every month,

rufioloveWe've got a Russian barber shop we like to go to also UFO... the guys are cool and we love the hot lather and old school experience...
Yep, and they're usually cool as hell, although I get the impression that they saw much misery in earlier parts of life, so I tip like a mofo. There's nothing like getting a precision haircut from a former soviet block Phd who came here to actually make enough to live compared to back home. DAMN I love this country!

I use same tipping logic. nice.

I travel to UES (74th street) for Paul Mole barber shop. Great haircut, no problem walking in, real old-time barber shop feel.

looking for that pick-me-up to power through an all-nighter?

Frank's on Thompson street in Greenwich Village. $17 Got to be specific with what you want though.

Lambie• Salvatore Anzalone (212)-742-8254 (Cuts Blankfein & Paulson) - Salvatore Barber Shop - Mon - Fri - 8am to 6pm
What's up with this place lately? That building got flooded out and the lower level hasn't been repaired yet. Best dry cleaners on earth were in that mall.

Have they relocated since Hurricane Sandy?

I can't think of the name...but it looks like a hole in the wall joint in Midtown, and the ladies inside only speak Russian. Best cut I've gotten in years tho

If you are looking for a super fabulous haircut I recommend going to see Ted Gibson at his Salon in the Flatiron area. It's a bit pricey at $1,200 a cut, but well worth it!

No. $1200 for a man's haircut means you're an ass. Nothing more. I'd say it's more along the lines of Marcus' statement above but it's figuratively sodomizing you.

When I was in my mid 20's in the late-'90's I partially lived in Boston. There was this barber in the old State Street building in the basement on Franklin near PO Square. There were Playboys and Penthouses to read, you could smoke cigs or buy a cigar from them. $8 for a great cut, $8 more for a straight razor shave. Find that in NYC, inflation adjusted.

i've heard of legendary haircuts from greek bonds
When evaluating whether or not to post something on WSO, I think to myself, "would an idiot post this" and if the answer is yes, I do not post that thing...
It depends. Are you white, black or Hispanic? It matters. I've had my personal barber since high school so I'm lucky, but from experience if your black then go to a black barber, white then go to a white barber. Hispanic barbers can usually cut both. Not racist here it's just barbers tend to cut their own kind of hair the best.

Depending on the style wanted pick your spots. If you have locks of love your better off going to a salon. Just want a fade then go to someone that's great with clippers.

It's not about the shop, it's about the guy cutting. You won't know until you go and get a cut for yourself.

Decisions decisions

Go to Raphael's barber shop. Including tip it's 20 dollars, and the service is reliable. I personally get 4 on the sides and back, and I keep the top longer so that I can semi-part it. The haircuts are consistent, fast but not too fast, and they take a straight razor to the sideburns and back of the head. You almost always need a shower afterwards though because I wish they cleaned you up better or shampooed your hair.

I was an Esquires guy while living and working downtown. High quality establishment.

Spiff near Grand Central. On 46th and 3rd. It's pricey. But you can get a 6 ($450) or 12 ($785) month membership for unlimited cuts. I go almost every two weeks.

They do a great job and give free alcohol. 'The Classic' includes shampoo, head massage, manicure, hot towel, neck massage, shoe-shine. Takes about an hour. $68 for that shit. No tip. So if you go 2x a month for 6 months retail is about $816 ... hence why tip isn't asked for nor required. Some do tip though. But I don't ball hard enough to tip. Only to get an overpriced haircut and feel good about myself.

Before I go check this place out, answer me honestly: Can they cut curly afro-ish hair short, correctly? (read: I am a black guy with limited barber shop options)

Lambie, they normally don't buzz cut if that's what you're asking. Unless its a requirement. I'm a white dude with your standard Justin Bieber hair so I can't comment on whether they can or can't cut your Afro locs properly. They just sit me down and scissor all the way.

All the core staff is highly trained and it's NYC, so I've seen plenty of people walk through the doors of all races, shapes, and sizes. African American as well.

 • 1 for Bedford Barbers

Favorite is Takamichi Hair on Bowery, just below Houston. ~ 80 + tip, but includes free drinks, massage, shampoo, etc. And plenty of talent catch your eye.

^I got a bad haircut from On the Mark, and my haircut is as simple as they come. (4 on the sides and back, longer on top.) My sideburns were uneven and the top of my head was shorter than the sides and back. It was ridiculous. I went there 3 times in total, and I'm probably never going back.

Been going to Jay at Astor Hair for a couple years now, he's done my asian head well and has honed his technique to suit my hair/style. 15+5 tip from me, but there are a ton of other barbers that work there with lower demand, I'm sure they're all proficient enough to get the job done.

lol its not about the price when it comes to the haircut, its about whether barber "gets it or not." you can essentially go to some flaming shit in manhattan that'll cost you 30 bucks and odds are you'll come out looking like a hipster, or you can hit up a dude who charges 12 bucks for a cut and can nicely (and evenly) line your shit up and know how to trim your hair with scissors and shit. just common sense to me.
