CFA | Ex-BMW Structured Finance (€1B ABS) | International Finance, CVs & Career Advice Q&A

Hi everyone — happy to be here.

I’m a CFA charterholder with over 12 years of international experience across structured finance, risk management, and client advisory. I spent nearly a decade with BMW Group in Munich, where I worked on cross-border asset-backed securities transactions of around €1B per deal across Europe and Asia, while also being involved in risk management and working closely with regulators, rating agencies, and institutional investors. I later served as CFO of Bavaria Reinsurance Malta, overseeing finance, risk management, and investment oversight, and I currently work as Senior Relationship Manager at Latitude Consulting Malta Ltd., advising international clients on migration-by-investment solutions.

Having studied and worked across the Middle East, the United States, Germany, and Malta, I’ve seen firsthand how challenging it can be to navigate finance careers internationally and understand the different paths available beyond the “traditional” routes.

Happy to answer questions on anything related to:

  • finance career paths (corporate finance, structured finance, risk management, consulting, capital markets)
  • CVs, applications, and interview preparation
  • international careers and relocation
  • CFA, masters, and academic decisions
  • or general career strategy in finance

Feel free to ask anything — happy to help.

In your finance career, do you prefer to position yourself as a generalist, gaining broad exposure across multiple areas (corporate finance, consulting, structured finance, capital markets), or as an expert in one niche area?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights and advice tailored to your expertise and the topics you're open to discussing:

  1. Finance Career Paths:

    • Structured finance roles, like your experience with €1B ABS deals, often provide strong technical skills and exposure to institutional investors, regulators, and rating agencies. These roles can lead to opportunities in ABS-focused hedge funds, private credit, or even transitioning to leveraged finance or restructuring teams.
    • For those exploring corporate finance or consulting, strategic finance groups in F500 companies often require strong modeling skills and the ability to handle diverse scenarios, as highlighted in WSO discussions.
  2. CVs, Applications, and Interview Preparation:

    • Highlighting international experience and cross-border deal exposure is a significant advantage. Tailor your CV to emphasize technical skills (e.g., ABS structuring, risk management) and leadership roles (e.g., CFO at Bavaria Reinsurance Malta).
    • For interviews, focus on your ability to navigate complex regulatory environments and collaborate with diverse stakeholders, as these are highly valued in finance roles.
  3. International Careers and Relocation:

    • Your background across the Middle East, the US, Germany, and Malta positions you as a global finance professional. For others aiming to follow a similar path, networking and leveraging platforms like LinkedIn and WSO are crucial for identifying opportunities and understanding regional nuances in finance.
  4. CFA, Masters, and Academic Decisions:

    • The CFA charter is highly regarded in structured finance, risk management, and investment roles. For those considering further education, a specialized master's program (e.g., in financial engineering or risk management) can complement the CFA and open doors to niche areas like securitization or quantitative finance.
  5. General Career Strategy in Finance:

    • For those starting out, gaining experience in investment banking or corporate finance can provide a strong foundation. Transitioning to specialized roles like structured finance or risk management often requires a mix of technical expertise and networking.

Feel free to dive deeper into any of these areas or share specific questions!

Hey, thanks for your post.

I am currently in structured finance - how hard do you think it would be for me to move into more classic corporate credit or cash flow lending type of roles? Or even special sits/ RX?

Worried that being too technical in term of default curves, advance rates, and more niche structural topics will lead to recruiters thinking I won’t have as good ‘typical’ finance skills like analysing EBITDA based business and 3 statement models etc
