Advice for getting better at HF case study

Had my first one today and I feel like it didn’t go great.

how do you guys get fluent on a stock in under 2 days?

One issue I have is being able to talk extensively and clearly on a name with that much preparation. Is there any advice for translating research into succinct / clear interview speaking?

I feel like I do the research but then it’s hard for me to remember everything when talking to multiple people / fielding several questions in such little time.

thanks, hopefully this makes sense

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some strategies to improve your performance in HF case studies and become more fluent in discussing a stock with limited preparation time:

  1. Beat Nervousness and Subconscious Rushing:

    • Confidence is key. The first step is to overcome nervousness and the feeling that you need to hurry. This often leads to fast talking and unclear communication.
    • Practice speaking slowly and clearly, even when you feel pressured.
  2. Develop a Well-Structured Base of Knowledge:

    • Ensure you have a solid understanding of the stock and the key points you want to discuss. This will help you express your thoughts concisely and confidently.
    • Use the STAR technique (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to structure your thoughts, especially for behavioral questions.
  3. Practice Out Loud:

    • Practice discussing the stock out loud with friends, family, or colleagues. This helps you get comfortable with verbalizing your thoughts and ensures you don’t lose critical information in translation.
    • Don’t try to memorize your answers. Instead, focus on key points and facts that you can talk about naturally.
  4. Create a List of Common Questions:

    • Compile a list of the most common questions you might be asked about the stock. This can come from resources like the Wall Street Oasis Behavioral Interview Guide or by researching common interview questions.
    • Consolidate these questions into frameworks to help you prepare more efficiently.
  5. Written Communication:

    • If you struggle with verbal communication, try writing down your thoughts and key points. This can help you organize your ideas and make it easier to recall them during the interview.
  6. Understand the Interviewer's Perspective:

    • Interviewers often assess your public speaking skills more than the content of your answer. Focus on being affable, confident, and presenting your thoughts in a logical order.
    • Practice storytelling and make your answers relatable and engaging.

By following these strategies, you can improve your ability to discuss a stock fluently and clearly, even with limited preparation time. Good luck with your future case studies!

what helps me quickly ramp up on a completely new name is to think as much as possible from first principles. What is it that the business does and what are its levers. Try to answer this question as simply as you can. That requires a few hours of in-depth research. But the deeper you understand the basics of the business, the easier it is to articulate it clearly. This is a weird one but being genuinely excited about the name helps too (even if you aren't, fool yourself for whatever reason that you find the business intriguing).

To add on, I think having a well thought-out research process that lays out where you can find info, what info you need, how to structure your thoughts, really helps streamline the process. This only takes 1 or 2 days to hammer out after getting some feedback from previous stock pitches you've done. All the best!
