Am I overqualified for a Fund Accounting position?
Recent econ graduate. No finance experience or internships. CFA Level 2 candidate. Is targeting a job in Fund Accounting a bad idea?
Ideally, I would like to be an analyst within an investment management firm, but it is obviously very competitive. End goal portfolio manager. I have been networking and have met some awesome and very helpful people.
I am scared of being pigeon-holed and stuck in a shitty BO job. I know people have, although rare, have made the transition to FO type role, but if I don't need to go through the grind to transition, I would prefer not to.
Just looking for some feedback, I am in Canada if that means anything, I understand I have no experience...
Thanks
There are 2 options:
1) Wait for a better job. Unless you desperately need the job, pass.
2) If you need the job, start networking the day you begin as a Fund Accountant. Move out of the position within your first year to avoid being pigeonholed.
Good luck in whichever choice you make.
How do you go about networking with a job, especially since the location is about 30 minutes outside the city? Just through having phone calls?
Depending on your start time, you could meet for coffee earlier in the morning. Calling, emailing, and using LinkedIn are yur best bets until you establish a good rapport.
