Asking for Internship Relocation Stipend Early?

Hey all, I'm coming to WSO's help again.

I'm a broke college junior--ran away from home at a young age, was at homeless shelters for a bit, then got a full-ride to college. I grinded in the libraries for the past three years reading every investing book I could find and landed my dream, dream internship at a large fund in NYC

Anyway, my cheapest option for housing this summer is probably to get an NYU dorm, but it's about $4,500 in total, due at least 1-2 weeks before I move in. However, my signing bonus of $5,000 only hits the bank after my first week at the internship. There's no way I can afford the $4,500 out of pocket.

Do you think it's appropriate for me to email HR and explain to them my situation in the hopes that I can get the signing bonus early? Is HR even the right people to contact? I can't get a loan because I have zero credit and nobody to co-sign. Also, my existing savings/income will be used to buy dress shirts and pants and shoes.

Thank you all.

Congrats on the offer.  I’d talk to your career services office / financial aid office, you would be surprised what buckets of capital they can tap for situations like this, especially if they know you well.

Also cheapest housing option is likely a sublet, though commute in is longer.

If a guy wise, would take a look at the Charles Tyrwhitt sales, really good bang for buck at 30 / shirt. Can also deal with just one pair of shoes (wear sneakers in, and leave shoes at desk).
