I recently got an email from D.E. Shaw inviting me to apply early for a 2019 summer research analyst internship. I'm a rising sophomore at a semi-target (unsure about the classification, we're top 15 US News but pretty low presence on Wall Street) with a good GPA and test scores, but an almost purely engineering background. Does this mean anything?

Do you guys know how you got on their list? Just curious as to why you got the solicitations, and others didn't...
I think it's worth applying if it's something you're interested in. However, I got the same email, but was rejected a few weeks later after applying, so I wouldn't get my hopes up too much if I were you.
To update, I did apply and got rejected in a week lmao. I do appreciate the promptness at least.

I had a first round 30 minute phone interview with them last fall. I remember it being one of my most interesting interviews I had in that they really wanted to find out how you think/approach experiences listed on your resume.
I was invited for a superday (though I did not receive an offer), and from my interviews they left a great impression on me. Very smart and laid back. Just be prepared to talk in depth about your experiences - good luck!

I had randomly applied to Shaw without knowing what they were in March, understandably got rejected, and then got the invite in May.

Any other insight on phone interview?
Just to shed some light on the early process for future references:
1) the email is a mass email and has (almost) no bearing on chances of admission. So is the invitation to the summer event. Rumor has it they sent it to well over a thousand students.
2) the fundamental teams are small and they do not recruit a lot of undergrads. Annual intern class ranges from 4-5 people (only for fundamental research analysts).
3) As most firms, they hire about half their class through the early process, which means 2-3.
4) The early process is a first round (~30mins) and a superday (~4hrs). There's no HR interview -- all done by analysts/PMs. No specific finance knowledge required, but they dig DEEP into how you think/your ability to look into and solve a problem.
Any insight on what they look for in the interview / questions they ask? Not a lot of information on interviews for fundamental positions
