Does anyone donate regularly?
Off topic but wanted to get a sense of ppl in this forum
Do you guys make any regular active / discretionary donations at all? Not talking about philanthropic levels, but something as simple as $20-50 a month - still a regular commitment, not some off the cuff spontaneity
I'm in my early 30s and most of my friends are in finance and this topic has never come up not even once - at least not about donations we do ourselves - and absolutely excluding for any tax deducting purpose.
And then caught up with a friend in average corporate and it seemed like this was something decent adults tend to do
Not trying to guilt trip anyone, just genuinely curious what the consensus practice is here
I give $250/yr to my high school (I got a ton of financial aid), $250/yr to college athletics, $365 to an orphanage, and throw $5-20 in the church collection basket when I attend and then ~$100 to random causes (ppl fundraising for marathons and walks, etc)
I should donate a lot more but it’s hard to find charities that do good work for causes I care about
I tithe 10% to my church (taxed) and around an extra 5-10% to things like gofundme / charities.
My church is a big outpost for charity, they post their financial revenue / spending every year so I have a degree of confidence as far as where the money is going.
Bruh y are ppl MSing this
Well, not now but eventually. I'm going to build a massive crypto scam and eventually monetize my stake to donate large sums. It's just the best and most effective way to be altruistic.
I donate to my college when they call me. Least I could do since I had a great time and got a sweet job out of it.
Hey, I donate/pledge to death row dogs so rescues can pull them. Worth every penny and wish I could save them all. Look into it, if you're in NY area..it's horrible what they do. Use your company match program also. 5-10 dollars each dog isn't enough but builds up when more people do it.
donate to fight real problems like hunger/cancer
I'll use my money for helping the helpless and unspoken for, you can do as you please.
I try to do random acts of kindness but do want to start something formal soon. For example; the other day my Uber driver was deaf and so I tipped 100% on a $50 trip or I bought a full, high calorific value meal from Chipotle for someone begging outside.
Ideally want to start volunteering/ donating to breast cancer / cancer-related causes in general. Have had too many people affected by it and personally lost my mom to it.
Donate to various causes many to do with water and food around the world. I think people in HFs are very charitable on the whole but usually keep it quiet you are correct. More common people discuss their side hustles, passive income and keep their charitable efforts quiet.
Interesting, thanks - the reason I asked is bc I honestly believed not many ppl commit to things regularly. Anw thanks for the tidbit

20% of take home every year. One day hope to have enough for a family foundation.
How much would be enough for a family foundation/how would you think about starting that? Genuinely curious how you think about it because I would love to do something like that if God willing one day I have the means to.
Have a couple examples of people who've started them in my network. Typically they have $5mm minimum in them, start hiring a team when it's 8 figures+. Personally wouldn't do anything structured until the latter number which is a ways away.
10% of take home at least a year across 2-3 charities in actively involved with (not religious ones)
I give a few percent to my church each month and then randomly make singular, larger donations every quarter or two to various charities/non-profits (especially in years where I’ve gotten outsized bonuses and/or have some appreciated stock I can donate to save on taxes).
Lmao nope, not a dollar.
Why not?
Candidly just no desire to give away my hard earned dollars. Will tip well though.
About 10% of pre tax income to various causes each year
I don’t have a routine but I find myself giving one off gifts of cash (like 10s of bucks or +) to homeless people if they seem like the down and out type or if there is a kid on the street. Don’t really care if it’s a scam or dangerous, I just stay away from the aggressive types.
similarly gifts of food if im holding a few beers or if im ab to head into a chipotle or other fast food joint
no structured donations though
