HF quant roles
I'm a second year bachelor in Economics student in a target school in Europe.
I was wondering what master should I attend (EU/US/UK/whatever) if I want to pursue a career in a HF in a kind of quant role.
I really like math and analytical subjects, but I currently do not have experience in coding. Is coding necessary for these type of roles? What kind of math/statistics/analytical subject is needed?
Thanks a lot
Hey there, future quant! It's great to see your enthusiasm for the field. Based on the most helpful WSO content, there are a few paths you could consider.
Firstly, coding is indeed a crucial skill for quant roles. Languages like Python, R, and C++ are often used in this field. So, it would be beneficial to start learning one of these.
As for the type of master's program, there are a few options that could set you up nicely for a career in a quant role at a hedge fund. Here are some programs that have been considered by others:
These programs are heavy on math and analytical subjects, which you mentioned you enjoy.
In terms of the type of math/statistics/analytical subjects needed, it's beneficial to have a strong understanding of calculus, linear algebra, probability, and statistics. Knowledge in areas like stochastic calculus, differential equations, and numerical linear algebra can also be beneficial.
Remember, the path to becoming a quant can be quite competitive, but with the right preparation and dedication, it's definitely achievable. Good luck on your journey!

Coding is absolutely a requirement. It's how you do your research, get it into the system, test it, etc. your masters can be in anything quantitative like math, physics, financial engineering. You should start practicing coding as soon as possible.
as a quant you need all the above. programming proficiency is incredibly important as a junior as you'll likely do a lot of the coding that the senior guys don't want to do.
