they are a fund of funds based out of chicago with i believe around 500mm AUM. don't know much about them other than that

I worked with Origami last year. They actually have $1.3B AUM. Great company, great people. Origami tends to be under the radar, but if you'd like to learn more, they've just launched an investment challenge. I'm not sure if the site is up yet, but you can google search "Origami Idea Challenge". I heard they're on facebook as well.

I think they invest directly according to their website.

On their website, typical investments include:

Illiquid residual interests in hedge funds Real estate and private equity fund interests and restructurings Hard-to-sell assets owned by funds Private joint ventures or other vehicles Minority interests in operating alternative management firms “Off-the-run” non-performing loans Other illiquid investments with no apparent exit strategy

Would you say they are different compared to a traditional distressed debt fund?

It depends on what your definition of "traditional" is. Distressed funds inherently are pretty flexible and can span asset classes. The bigger name distressed funds that you've probably heard of don't traffic in some of this stuff. Conversely, these guys will never be found in a big distressed play like CZR/PCG/MDR that you'd hear in the news.
