Origami Capital
Hi. Origami Capital does a couple of info sessions at my school. I don't know much about them, and their website doesn't have much info on them.
Anybody willing to enlighten me?

Brilliant.
bump anybody?
I don't know if I'm just naive, but I can't tell if y'all are being serious or just fucking with me.
They're just punning on the fund's name. Don't worry, the fund is not about to collapse (or if it is, no one here knows one way or the other).
oh shit, i couldn't tell that it was a pun. haha cuz origami is FOLDED paper Okay, I guess they're just little-known.
they are a fund of funds based out of chicago with i believe around 500mm AUM. don't know much about them other than that
I thought they invest directly according to their website?
Some basic info: Origami Capital Partners, LLC is a privately owned fund of hedge funds sponsor. The firm primarily provides its services to individuals and institutional investors. It invests in hedge funds. The firm employs a value approach to investing. Origami Capital Partners, LLC was founded in 2008 and is based in Chicago, Illinois. 191 North Wacker Drive Suite 2350 | Chicago, IL | 60606 | United States Phone: 312-263-7800 Fax: 312-263-7806
So they're a value fund in Chicago......how specific.......
Well if you are fine with fund of funds, most of them operate very similarly and with similar payscales, especially in Chicago.
I worked with Origami last year. They actually have $1.3B AUM. Great company, great people. Origami tends to be under the radar, but if you'd like to learn more, they've just launched an investment challenge. I'm not sure if the site is up yet, but you can google search "Origami Idea Challenge". I heard they're on facebook as well.
Are they a "fund of funds" as such, or do they invest directly?
I think they invest directly according to their website.
Hey man, I know that this is a really old comment, but could you elaborate more on what Origami does?
My understanding of Orgami is that its Richard Elden's (founder of Grosvenor) son's secondaries turnaround vehicle that is a combo of distressed investing and legal/bankruptcy maneuvers in the HF/PE/RE pooled space. Their fund of hedge fund family business is Lakeside Capital.
So Origami is not a FOF and it invests directly?
Believe they're a liquidity provider for GPs or LPs that need to sell a stake and invest "directly" in the sense that they'll front capital if it's needed with portfolio companies in an existing fund in which they've bought a stake.
On their website, typical investments include:
Illiquid residual interests in hedge funds Real estate and private equity fund interests and restructurings Hard-to-sell assets owned by funds Private joint ventures or other vehicles Minority interests in operating alternative management firms “Off-the-run” non-performing loans Other illiquid investments with no apparent exit strategy
Would you say they are different compared to a traditional distressed debt fund?
It depends on what your definition of "traditional" is. Distressed funds inherently are pretty flexible and can span asset classes. The bigger name distressed funds that you've probably heard of don't traffic in some of this stuff. Conversely, these guys will never be found in a big distressed play like CZR/PCG/MDR that you'd hear in the news.
