Left Lane slander is going to far
Bump
Best bet is to go to LinkedIn profiles of people who are currently at Ivey or Queens and see what they did (especially those who were successful). Gives you an idea of what people have managed to land and what is possible as a freshman. A lot of freshman internships, especially those off cycle are going to be untraditional or without a real recruiting timeline. Just go reach out!
I know CPP is possible as a freshman in the summer.
only for women
Throw MS all you want, your last post was funny but at this point it’s going a little too far. This isn’t a big company like TD or RBC, there are a select few people who work there and these posts are just publicly humiliating these people and making it harder for them to leave. The juniors there want to leave, they’re there just to get their foots in the door to lateral and find better opportunities. The juniors there know the firm is a joke, I personally know some people who worked at Left Lane and I can tell you that the culture is terrible. From what I hear, the president is a nice person, he’s actually very sharp regarding supply chain, and they do have some strong connections with strategics and US PE firms. However, the seniors below him are toxic, insecure and power trip and he’s oblivious to what’s going on. Most of the juniors there are trying to get out but can’t because the firm isolates them, the seniors have access to their LinkedIns so they monitor their networking outreaches with Bay Street. It’s pretty shitty, and the longer they stay there the more isolated/stuck they become. These posts are funny but it also makes it harder for these guys to leave which is what you want.
Not based in North America but surely during your first summer any internship is better than no internship? Even if it’s a firm you don’t plan on working at after graduating. You have two more summers to get internships at firms you like more and this summer you can still probably learn more from Left Lane than you would from doing nothing/doing compliance at GS.
This is a troll post
.
There was a freshman that had a Evercore internship from FIU
In my experience, people have got into finance with a wide variety of first summer jobs. Its not like it is impossible to get a job in IB/PE if you did your first summer somewhere that isnt finance related.
If you're really keen on finance, some of the boutique Canadian IB shops will hire. The work might not be great or representative of what you would actually do in IB, but you need to start somewhere. Also dont underestimate the power of good school clubs and good grades. I think people overlook that a lot.
As an aside, I think the idea of working somewhere where you will "learn something" is a bit less important than you might think. Get the brand name / job title on your resume, and learn how finance works outside of work. Spoiler alert: you wont learn a whole lot in your dream IB shop anyways, where you usually get staffed on very boring tasks that analysts/associates don't want to do.
Any finance related internship is good for freshman summer, including things like wealth management, accounting, and back office operations. There are also a few kids every year who land things like boutique ib/pe/am.
Not hard at all man.
Send out 20 linked in messages a day to bankers in your area. - No not BOA and GS but local shops and literally every and any corporation, company financial services place etc…
You may have to work for free but make a template - short and sweet explain your interests and do your research on their company. I promise you’ll land one if you do your research and send 100 messages in a week.
For the freshmen at Ivey/Smith, do consider doing internships in the small organizations or start-ups since most of them provide real learning. In addition, you can approach the career center of your school, or go through the Alumni for further leads. It’s often the case that somebody recommends or suggests something to you, where you’d find the greatest opportunities. Good luck!
