2025 - Thoughts on Gordon Dyal & Co?
Planning on recruiting next year. Heard about this firm from a couple buddies of mine and some people within the industry. General consensus is that they have a really hardcore culture but compensated with top of the street level pay. Would appreciate any insights.
I have a buddy who lateraled there. They seek out big deals, mainly within pharma but slowly expanding into other industries. Hours are definitely bad, especially around live deals, but not as bad as what people seem to say around here lol and ultimately they pay a lot for a reason.
Is the pay quoted fr?
Associate here at an EB. My roommate works at Dyal so happy to chime in.
The firm plays way above its league and works on gigantic deals ($10B+) comparable to the ones that BB bankers work on. From my understanding, pay is quite literally the top of the street (ranges from 300-500k for analysts). Firm is also rapidly growing and is looking to expand its analyst class as well as the sectors they cover.
But obviously this comes with a lot of responsibilities. Analysts typically are tasked with running the models themselves and client exposure is unparalleled.
They like to take kids who are extremely technical and understand the nuances of valuation very well. For some reason they like to ask math questions too.
If pay is $3-500K for analysts, does that mean $1mm+ associates and multiple million VPs / Directors?
That’s insane.
Very cool firm as a whole. has quite a few recurring mega-size clients so you probably can get really in-depth understanding within an industry (mostly pharma or industrials and mining) and do buy-side deals. People I came across from there are also nice and chill too.
What I know is that analysts get paid more than MF PE associates.
They close some mega chem deals as well.
Real M&A big whale hunters.
any insights on needing prior chem/pharma/industrial knowledge to break in? Or it's still a generalist shop
Generalist
Seems really risky. All deal flow basically reliant on Gordon Dyal who was former head of gs ib. If something happens to him or he decides to retired the firm is basically cooked. Also analysts all work until 3am 7 days a week
Is this really true (hours?)
Yes, know someone who interned there. He didn’t get to go out a single night that summer
My roommate worked there.
I used to get back from work pretty late (EB) and sleep around 2-3 am. He rarely gets back before that.
When I started to go to gym in the morning, we went a month without seeing each other despite living under the same roof.
The only proof of life I could find was the packaging of microwave dinners in the trash.
I hope you find your roommate
That's honestly sad, that's no way to live.
