Advice for Finding Place to Rent
What're your best bits of advice for finding NYC rental for next summer? Are there better ways to find places than burning through Zillow? Do I find friends w/ RE connections..? lol
Feels like most of this process comes down to luck with timing. Budget is reasonably flexible, but don't want to break the bank. Don't think NYU-type dorm subleasing is my thing. Love what Madison Square/Union Square, Flatiron, Gramercy, East Village have to offer. Big fan of subway accessibility, especially up to Midtown East. Not sure if classic FinGuy in Murray Hill is my thing yet, but welcome to all suggestions--not entirely opposed to it though. Think I would prefer to have 1 or 2 roommates to keep things interesting.
Thank you in advance for any help.
Edit: might be helpful to make a 'ranking' of neighborhoods, will add if of interest. I've seen a few before but they tend to lack substance.
Long term Airbnb for the summer. Sooner you get it, the better. Before options for next summer disappear. Roommates will help, cut price but you may give up privacy for exchange. Remember you really just need a place to sleep and shower cause you’ll be working all the time. I got a really cheap place in Lower East Side and commuted to work and it allowed me to spend more money at the bars. Best decision I made.
Fair warning - I had multiple Airbnb hosts straight up lie to me when I was looking for lodging for the summer. Tons of scammers and sheisters on that app.I would filter by the dates I wanted to stay, reach out to the idiot, mouthbreathing hosts only for them to tell me "I don't want to rent during that time frame because I don't know if the apartment will be available". Then don't list your apartment as available for that time frame???? Also, I booked a night in an Airbnb to stay before moving into my summer apartment, all was well and when I landed at the airport (2 hours before check in!!!!!) my host told me they couldn't accommodate me, and refused to cancel. Fun fact, if they refuse to cancel and ask you to cancel, you get no money back. So. Many. Awful. Experiences. Looking for lodging on Airbnb. I spent so many HOURS on the phone with the (admittedly very helpful) support staff trying to rectify the situation that these dickhead scammers put me in. Friends have used VRBO to much better effect, my friend and I used another service for short term rentals that works pretty well because you sign a lease, so it's basically impossible to have a host flake and try to scam you.
Rant aside, don't sleep on walking around neighborhoods you want to live in and call any realtors you see signs for. Can be a great way to find nice, affordable units outside of the conventional websites. I stayed in the Lenox hill area and loved it. It’s quiet, and you work so much that it makes more sense to optimize to be walking distance to work and 30 minutes on the train from bars rather than 30 minutes on the train from work and walking distance to bars imo. Plus, a ~17 minute walk to the office is delightful when it’s early summer. Also, if the trains stop or if there’s unannounced maintenance, you don’t get screwed over. Plenty of reasonably priced units in the 50s-60s to boot, and you’re in a very clean, safe part of the city. Girlfriend has walked home many times from the subway without so much as a single disturbance. It’s a great place to live.
Thanks, that's really helpful.
