Advice needed for first summer

In my first year of uni (UK - London) and managed to secure a summer for 2025 at a small advisory firm. Since I’m only in my first year of uni I didn’t have much time to learn the technicals and so although I know them, I’m not wholly confident I can utilise my knowledge of them well enough do to the job to a high level. So my question is basically how I can stand out and perform well during my internship despite not being fully ready and confident in my technicals. Thanks.

First of all, congrats. I’d focus on learning the basics and mastering them, IRR, NPV and MoIC are the bulk of what we do and everything else kind of revolves around that. Understand the mechanics and how to calculate each. Second, I’d also spend a good amount of time on PowerPoint and Excel, add shortcuts to the taskbar, practice not using the mouse and how to create charts etc. Reality is, as a junior member of the team you’re there to work on deliverables (i.e., valuations, presentations, sensitivities). You’ll learn a lot as you practice more in the job, but if I could prepare for a few weeks in  advance, that’s what I’d do. Most important thing is your attitude, always ask for work, ask questions and do not dismiss work that you don’t think it’s interesting. Good luck.
