Age in Investment Banking

I recently interviewed at a MM firm for an IB Analyst role. The interview went pretty well and I feel strongly about getting an offer. I didn't graduate right after high school. Graduated HS in 2014 but graduated undergrad December 2022. Was asked what year I graduated HS. Will my age impact the likelihood of an offer?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, age should not be a significant factor in your likelihood of receiving an offer for an Investment Banking Analyst role. Here are some key points from the WSO threads:

  • Age Perception: Many users have shared that age is not a disadvantage. For instance, "CisSiberianOrchestra" mentioned that being in the later half of their 20s did not hinder their recruitment process and even helped in some cases.
  • Focus on Skills and Fit: "alwaysb1" emphasized that age should not be considered at all. The focus should be on the type of people you want to work with and what you are capable of achieving.
  • Energy and Commitment: Another user highlighted that the only potential downside of age could be if recruiters perceive a lack of energy or commitment due to family obligations. However, demonstrating the same level of energy and enthusiasm as younger candidates can mitigate this concern.

In summary, your age and the year you graduated high school should not significantly impact your chances of receiving an offer, especially if you have demonstrated the necessary skills, energy, and fit for the role.

They ask you the high school question bc its a roundabout way of asking how old you are. It is illegal to ask you how old you are since as it is illegal to consider your age as a factor for candidacy but they still do that anyways. Its scummy but ageism is real in this industry

In a similar position, '24 college grad ('13 high school grad), mix of military, working other jobs and some IB experience sprinkled in as well. I have had similar experiences where they have asked what year I graduated high school and that has no doubt impacted what was otherwise a very positive reception to my candidacy.
