monitoi love how for penn they outright ignored wharton... none of wharton's concentrations appear in the list of majors

because "concentrations" are not majors... if you go to wharton, you major in economics, which is clearly there.

People can call bullshit on the list all they want, but come on guys, are you saying you could do better? It's like putting together a list of the hottest women of all time, it's highly subjective and not overly differentiated. I'm actually impressed by the quality of the list and the UI, most of these things you see are up on shitty websites and seem like they were thrown together in the order someone thought of schools.

brown has one its tracks within a major, business economics as a part of commerce..., listed. if they can have tracks listed, concentrations should be listed too

also, most academic department don't even show up on the departments list

ny23but this list lost all credibility when BU ended up ahead of Dartmouth

I thought the same thing exactly, but when I saw Boston College wasn't mentioned, I wondered if there was a typo

From a Canadian perspective, when you see McGill/UBC/UofT/UofAlberta as "the top Canadian schools" in that order you know the list utter bs.

From the Contact Us page: "UK, Spain, France and Singapore"

Call it American Elitism, but any website housed in those countries and those countries alone is a bullshit source of academic consulting. One doesn't even need to consider this fact, though, when one can see that these jackanapes have put four UK universities in the top seven. Maybe in the days of the Empire, but not in 2009, chaps.

Edit: And Australian National University ahead of Stanford? Edinburgh ahead of Berkeley? I rest my case.

I'm pretty sure this ranking places a lot of weight on the research performance of universities.

Take it for all it's worth.

Take it for all it's worth.

LeggoMyGekkohow on earth did dartmouth end up at such a low ranking. lol

Schools like Dartmouth and Brown are low, because they are not research powerhouses, and international rankings put a heavy premium on this.

If you notice, most the private American universities in the top 20 have strong research reputations in the humanities, natural sciences, social sciences, engineering or mathematics --Caltech, Chicago, Columbia, Cornell, Duke, Harvard. Hopkins, MIT, Penn, Princeton, Stanford, Yale,

Dartmouth and Brown have more of a quasi-liberal arts college bent, so they got penalized hard.

Anyway, let the dick measuring continue.

You know, my school was ranked 5 last year. All the top recruiters in the world were throwing jobs at us after our summer internships because they were so impressed. This year we dropped to 6, and they rescinded all the offers because we are no longer top 5. Our whole graduating class is now unemployed because our school is now considered subpar in the world.

The UK looks to be a bit of a mess - not sure many students, or anyone for that matter would put UCL in the top 50, let alone top 10, and better than LSE? LSE is insanely good and v. high quality. List is a bit silly.

If you found that surprising, wait till you see King's at #22.. Absolutely hilarious..

Considered that Cambridge, Oxford, Imperial College London and University College London are that high ranked, I find it quite surprising that so few great talent, excellent academic research or at least a few successful enterpreneurs came from there in the last years. Not even to speak of University of Edinburgh. WTF.

Dear Brits, arrogance alone has nothing to do with ability.

top 10. UK uni. Not bad at all. I guess attending a university that is older than some countries does have its merits.

Why LSE is that much lower? It's a one trick pony, it got economics, and....? Politics doesn't count because they are shit at it. Really shit.

Why UCL is so high? Because they #1 biotechnological institution in the world, are top sciences research house, and overall are a good all rounder.

Surprised as to why Oxford is below Cambridge. But never mind.

I do agree that there are a lot more better unis (Durham, Warick to name but two) than Kings, although, they are still a top research institution.

What really pisses me off though, is that all these tables are so full of fucking 2nd and 3rd rate US universities, whilst the true academic powerhouses of India, China, and Central Europe get the shitty ranks. This Americanization makes me sick. Your academia is inferior to pretty much any country on earth, and I really fail to see why you bristle with indignation when anyone tells you the truth that your universities. are. shit.

Just my 2c.

__________ Just my 2c.

http://www.topuniversities.com/worlduniversityrankings/results/2008/ind… Academic peer review comprised 40% of the score. Considering that 21 schools had a perfect 100, the rankings then are determined by near meaningless considering that the differentiation came from: Student/Faculty Ratio - "What exactly is Faculty?" Citations - Heavily biased against research institutions. International Faculty and Students - This is what it comes down to?

Even when you add up individual numbers, the rankings are not consistent There's much more worth in examining a school's score for each discipline rather than the rankings at large.

The bottom line is: the difference between most of these schools is negligible. There is absolutely no basis to rank them on unelss you start coming up with horse shit metrics like $ spent on research, average HS GPA, etc... these things mean little to nothing. I know people who graduated high school with 2.5 GPAs, went to college, graduated at the top of their class. I also know people who had a low HS GPA, did a year or 2 and a mediocre school, and transferred to a top school and still graduated near the top of their class.

Your seriously going to tell me that one can differentiate between Yale, Harvard, Princeton, Wharton, Oxford? There's not much of a difference between the kids that go to one school vs the other, same goes for the faculty. Many of these kids probably got into many of the schools on these lists and picked their for whatever reasons be it that someone in their family went to the same school, financial aid packages, campus atmosphere/location, sports, friends, perceived prestige, etc... same goes for the faculty. So if you can't differentiate between the aptitude of the students, and you can't differentiate between the competence of the faculty, the only difference is their school logo, mascot, and buildings.

Obviously this applies for the top schools on the list; not so much for the BU, Wisconsins, UC-Davis, and Georgia-Techs out there
