Am I Screwed? A Mid-College Crisis

Hello! I am in kind of a mid-college crisis. A little about myself: I am a former DI lacrosse player, and I am a junior-transfer at a top-30 school with a 3.9 GPA. I honestly have not had much experience in modeling/finance, since my focus has been on marketing. Since I am a junior, I feel like every class at a BB has been filled and the window is closing extremely fast or has already closed., I have some connections in the field, with an MD at a BB who has been extremely helpful. I have a good resume, but all of my background is in marketing.

I guess the question I am trying to ask, is how realistic is it for me to get an internship at a top firm/boutique for summer 2020? Also, I know that the junior year internship is crucial, and if I cannot land one, is the trek into IB justified?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Don’t think that a top firm (IB) is realistic at this point.

My two cents is that you should focus on getting ANY finance related internship right now. Maybe try regional boutiques/firms.

It’ll be hard to explain why you want IB when you have no finance experience at all to back it up.

Don’t stop networking. You should be blasting cold emails and speaking to anyone that’s willing to hear what you have to say.

Yeah agreed with everything said ^^ also use your lacrosse connections a lot. I don't play but aren't a shit ton of lax guys that play D1 at schools like Duke, Georgetown etc are in finance? My varsity team has a history of sending a decent amount of guys into IB and the alumni stick out their neck for us since our sport is smaller than basketball or football but maybe that's just a one off thing.

Highly recommend the extra semester. Former D1 lacrosse player/3.9/top 30 school you will do very well if you give yourself a full season of networking and recruiting. If possible I would change your major to finance (or at least pick up an econ or math minor), marketing is not looked upon that favorably.

I'll probably have to do an extra semester regardless due to transfer credits. As far as a major I'm still business without a concentration, but my work experience on my resume is generally focused around marketing. I believe I can still pick up finance as a concentration. Recruiting as a sophomore sounds like a great idea, but is the window closing on that as well?

Thank you for the insight!

For sophomore summer regarding top firms I believe it is/has (im not in the loop for sophomore bb internships, I would ask around).

You dont need a top top internship for this upcoming summer, I would try getting something relatable close to ib, an ib boutique internship should be easy to get but dont overlook other internships that are relatable(pe/some type of internship where you will model/other?. I interned in the investment arm of a certain firm, and it was a great experience and provided me a much better training experience than I would had gotten at a small boutique.
