Asked to Sing a Song During IB Interview. Did my Friend Handle This Correctly?

This was for a friend's summer analyst investment banking position. The VP interviewing him asked him to sing a song. He chose "Happy Birthday To You" as his song because it's simple, easy to sing in-tune, and the lyrics are easy to remember. I agreed and thought this was the perfect choice.

However, he hasn't heard back since the interview, and I'm starting to think it was the song choice that tilted them the wrong way. I thought if he had chosen, "Rolling in The Deep" by Adele they would have liked that he took a big risk choosing to sing a more challenging song. Thoughts on this? Maybe the interviewer wants to hear a classic like "Yellow Submarine" by the Beatles? I'm perplexed - someone please fill me in.

I guess they're testing a couple of things: (1) Confidence - did he get flustered by the request? Did he even sing? Did he commit? Sounds like he passed this and that was the main point of it. In some places (like Ireland) it is cultural prerequisite that you can sing a song (2) Creativity - what song did he choose? Does it show character? Does it show he has some interest in music? Sounds like he failed this (3) Fit - this was a chance to show some common interests - if he had sung a classic rock song and the interview is into that music that could be a bonding point. This would be icing on the cake but clearly was failed

I highly doubt - given he actually sang a song - that he would get dinged on it. But imo it was a missed opportunity and was far less confident than choosing an actual pop song. Aside from singing "money, money, money" by ABBA or "Money" by Pink Floyd, it was pretty much the worst choice of song.

I'm only a student so I can't speak from an interviewer's perspective, but I would honestly think it's unfair and silly for him getting rejected over this no matter what song he sang (as long it's not "Fck you thunder, you can suck my dck" lmao - he actually sang a song on the fly which is really good. I think the most important question is how did the interviewer react? Like, was he smiling and laughing, or was he fairly straight-faced and not amused? And how did your friend carry it out? Was he annoyed/angry, or did he laugh and have fun with it?
