Associate - lateral interview

All,

Currently an associate at a well known EB, within an M&A team with a specific coverage. For various reasons, I am trying to lateral and applied to various BBs. I have been called by two of them and the first one wants me to pass a case study; the second one has planned various calls with VPs and Directors.

Any clue on what should I expect? I have not passed any interviews since I joined so I hope I won’t get grilled on technicals.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know:

  1. Case Study Preparation:

    • For the first BB interview requiring a case study, focus on LBO modeling and technical skills. Case studies often test your ability to analyze a business, evaluate its financials, and present a recommendation. Brush up on your modeling skills and ensure you can confidently walk through your thought process.
    • Use resources like the M&I interview guide or basic modeling courses if you need a refresher.
  2. VP and Director Calls:

    • These calls are likely to focus on your deal experience, behavioral questions, and your understanding of the M&A process. Be prepared to discuss:
      • Why you want to lateral to their bank.
      • Specific deals you've worked on, including your role, challenges faced, and outcomes.
      • How your experience aligns with the group you're interviewing for.
    • Behavioral questions may include topics like teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving under pressure.
  3. Technical Questions:

    • While lateral interviews are generally less technical than full-time interviews, you should still be prepared for some technical questions. These could include valuation methods, M&A processes, and industry-specific knowledge.
    • Since you're already at an EB, they may assume you're strong on technicals but could still test your knowledge to ensure you're up to par.
  4. General Tips:

    • Tailor your responses to highlight what you can contribute to the BB team, such as your expertise in M&A and specific coverage experience.
    • Be ready to articulate why you're looking to lateral and why their bank is the right fit for you.
    • Networking can also play a key role in lateraling, so if you haven't already, try to connect with people at the BBs you're targeting to gain insights and strengthen your candidacy.

Good luck with your interviews!
