Associate promote with non mba masters

Hi all,

I’m a summer analyst at an EB with a bit of an unusual path. After this year will graduate from a technical 2 year masters with a degree relevant to (and funded by) the industry group I’m working in. Went into the masters program right out of undergrad.

Had lunch today with a MD who asked me if I’d come on as an associate or analyst if I got an offer. Said analyst because I heard that banking doesn’t value non mba masters, although I know in consulting I’d come in at an associate level (have considered recruiting for them). Our EB competes with MBB in some cases and values its “intellectual curiosity”

He said that it sucks to have two working years gone and two masters years not recognized, so if this were a deciding factor “we have some leeway in this office and so I would raise it with them”. (It being coming in at associate level)

Now considering bringing it up if I get an offer — although I know I’d be super lucky to begin with! What would you recommend doing? I like banking but had a MBB Partner offer to help me apply there as associate level and skipping two analyst years/not burning out is tempting...

“Leverage” (still replaceable): technical masters respected in industry, also a minority that’s underrepresented in this office, they’ve spent a summer on me already & my mid summer reviews were very good

Risk: burning bridges, Getting offer rescinded

If you think MBAs learn anything about finance (memorizing the 400 on the side doesn’t count), I’ve got a bridge to sell you.

In continental Europe, practically everyone does a Masters and they all start as analyst. BTW, Bain and BCG refers to analysts as associate and people without work experience definitely start as analyst unless they have a Ph.D. Also, it would be a bit odd for you to do the summer as an analyst and come in as an associate. Personally, I would plant the seed of an early promotion rather than asking about coming as an associate given your summer title and lack of FT work experience.
