Easier for a female to enter into IB in Australia. Do you have a cadetship/co-op? UBS?

Investment Banks prefer someone in the GO8. Why do you want to break into IB? Do you have strong EC's or at least 2 IB internship experience?

We have a partnership with KPMG but that's all in terms of IB. I haven't interned in IB yet, I really want to get a summer internship though at the end of this year and hopefully something in winter next year. It's just getting the foot in the door to get those internships. From what I've read and heard from other's is that it's a fast paced work environment, results driven, tee's you up with a good skill set for the future and I think it would be really interesting helping companies grow in the way IB helps. I also really like the idea of the team based environment (working on live deals together etc.).

My EC's are good, the only thing I'm worried about is that for the last 18 months I've been pigeon holed into financial planning which is a lot different from corporate finance. Not sure if there's much valid knowledge I can bring over with that.... The only real bonus I can attribute to IB from FP is that it has improved my organisational skills out of sight

Your aim right now should be aiming to get those IB internships. Financial planning is different from corporate finance, so why did you want to persue FP? If you are RG146 compliant, that's really good.

By the way, honours is valued in Finance. Just a straight Finance degree with 80 WAM from a non-target is not competitive enough, maybe for an interview at most at MM/Boutique firms.

You seem to think being a female is a hindrance in IB recruiting and it definitely isn't. I wouldn't waste time changing schools unless the one you go to is really low on the scale. Main issue is straight finance degree with 80 WAM (most applicants do a 'harder' combined degree, frequently with higher averages), but there's no reason you wouldn't be lobbing in internship applications now.

Also I'd say the cart before the horse adage is somewhat relevant re a US move at the moment. Get into an IB and perform well before you worry about deal flow.

My reasoning behind changing schools would be for access to more partnerships, you don't think this is important from a networking perspective? My uni is definitely nothing above the stock standard in Australia. Do you think my internship applications will get past HR with a WAM of 80 or would my only real chance be to try and network into one?

Being a female isn't a hindrance for recruiting, because firms are actively looking for talented women to balance out their ranks. However, the gender factor is not insignificant, as quite a few teams have structural or cultural factors that make it more difficult for women to thrive. Anyone going into the industry should find a team where they think they will succeed and feel at home - you'll spend more time in the office than in your apartment.
