Average MD Tenure

Kinda curious, how long do MD's last at the top of the hierarchy in banking. I just realized some of my MD's are in their mid to late 50s so many may be heading for retirement but it doesn't seem like they are about to slow down.

I don't think you can be a truly incompetent MD can you? So if you last this long most likely you're in it for the long haul and can hold down a job. Can someone remain an MD for 15+ years if they bring in adequate revenue and don't want to leave which makes it hard for those below them to grow? Is that why promotions to MD are so difficult? And is there a limit to how long you can be on top?
